SYNOPSIS When Grandmother was in village, she used to feed street dogs. She went to school with author as school was attached to the temple. When author finished learning alphabets & morning prayer and grandmother finished reading scriptures they walked home together. They threw stale chapattis to the village dogs who would meet them at the temple door.
In the city, she took to feeding sparrows. Every afternoon, she relaxed sitting in the verandah breaking bread into little bits to feed the sparrows. Some sparrows perched on her legs, others on shoulders and some on head. She smiled but never shooed them away. It used to be the happiest half hour of life. When grandmother died, and her body was placed on the bed, the sparrows sat in the verandah around her, mourning her death.
THEME Author s grandmother had love and compassion for animals. She used to feed dogs in village and sparrows in city. She used to and loved to spend time with animals. She used to enjoy her company with sparrows. That is referred to as the happiest half hour of her life. Sparrows also enjoyed her company and loved her. When grandmother died, the sparrows mourned her death.
