Poem Types through the Lens of Movie Genres

Poem types are
like
 different genres of movies

Narrative Poem

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."
La la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

Tells a story with a beginning, middle,
and an end
Has characters, setting, plot, and theme
Could be made into a small movie
Has a climax/points of tension

Ballad

Same as a Narrative but must also…
Tragic story (something dies or ends)
Simple language
Repetitive

So, is ‘The Piano Man’ a ballad?
It all comes down to interpretation…is it tragic?

Ode

Praises a person, place of thing

Song of Myself
By Walt Whitman
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loaf and invite my soul,
I lean and loaf at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.
My tongue, every atom of my blood, formed from this soil, this air,
Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same,
I, now thirty seven years old in perfect health begin,
Hoping to cease not till death.
Creeds and schools in abeyance,
Retiring back a while sufficed at what they are, but never forgotten,
I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard,
Nature without check with original energy.

Elegy

Praises someone/something that is over or dead
Poetic form of EULOGY
If stops, praising, then it’s not an elegy

Lyric

Presents a poet’s thoughts, views, ideas, on a
topic
Can contain ‘elements’ of other types, but is
predominantly the BIG IDEA
Not to be confused with song lyric
s

Ironic

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic, don't you think
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought, it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-
bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice."
And isn't it ironic,l don't you think

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and
everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and
everything blows up
In your face
A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a
knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny way of helping you out
Helping you out.

Different types of poems are likened to various genres of movies, each with its unique characteristics and elements. Narrative poems tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end, while ballads add a tragic twist. Odes praise subjects, elegies honor what is deceased, and lyrics delve into the poet's thoughts and ideas. The ironic poem sheds light on life's unexpected twists and turns, much like ironic situations. This comparison helps in understanding and appreciating the diversity and nuances of poetry.
