Peer Review: Testing New Medicines on MRSA Bacteria

Peer Review: How scientists get their homework marked - protocol When the body is infected with bacteria, we feel ill. Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria that are infecting the body, so that we get better. MRSA is a type of bacteria that makes people very ill, and the medicines we have do not work very well. We tested three new medicines to see if they can kill MRSA using the following method. 1. Grow MRSA bacteria in a petri dish 2. Dip a circle of paper into medicine, and put it onto the bacteria 3. If the medicine kills the bacteria they will turn white so there will be a white circle around the paper with the medicine on 4. Measure the size of the white circle in milimetres with a ruler 5. Test each medicine three times and work out the average size of the white circle
