WHAT IS THE PATRIOT PEN? WHAT IS THE PATRIOT PEN? National, VFW-sponsored youth essay competition for 6th,7th, and 8th graders. Students have an opportunity to write an essay expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme in 300-400 words. Awards at the post, district, department, and national levels total over $1.2 million each year. 2022-2023 Theme: My Pledge to Our Veterans
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS ESSAY REQUIREMENTS Essays must be original 300-400 words (every word is counted except title/footnotes) No identifying information in essay (name, school, city, race,etc) Poetry is not excepted Quotations should be used sparingly Submitted to a participating post by midnight October 31. JUDING CRITERIA JUDING CRITERIA Essays will be selected at the post, district, and state level based on the following criteria: Knowledge of theme is worth 30 points Show a thorough knowledge of the theme in your work. Theme development is worth 35 points Answer all relevant facts about the theme (who, what, when, where, & why) Clarity of ideas is worth 35 points Leave reader with clear understanding of your explanation. District Chairman's Signature Student Signature A head & shoulder picture is REQUIRED for District winners. Submissions to Department may be scanned/emailed

WHAT IS THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR WHAT IS THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM? PROGRAM? Each year the VFW selects an elementary, middle, and high school teacher to participate in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Program. Eligible candidates Promote civic responsibility Promote flag etiquette Promote patriotism Invites veterans into their classroom Fosters democratic values in their classrooms. Are currently licensed teachers in grades K-12
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION Nominations may be submitted by themselves, fellow teachers, supervisors, family members, or other interested individuals. One page resume as a minimum or up to five pages as a maximum of documentation of their teaching experience such as References News articles Head-and-shoulder photo of themselves
