Right from the start

Nursery experience is often a child’s first venture alone into the larger world
outside the family and the home. What children experience and learn in
nursery can create strong and lasting foundations on which to build on in later
life, so we believe it is essential that these first experiences are of the
highest quality. We endeavour to create a warm, interesting environment,
where learning through play is valued, success is recognised and a positive
attitude to learning is nurtured.
Our Aims

To make all parents/carers and children feel welcome
To provide a safe, secure and inclusive environment for all

To create a rich, stimulating learning environment that fosters children’s
holistic development. Promoting achievement, attainment and creativity.

To support, facilitate and enable children to fulfil his or her own potential

Foster partnership with parents, carers and other professionals to support all
aspects of learning and development.
.
Our Ethos

To help guide us in all that we do here at Paradykes, these values
describe what is really important to us
Parents and families are respected and valued
We respect children as competent, capable individuals with enormous
potential
Warm, positive relationships between children and adults are vital
Relationships with the community and children’s wider environment are
very important
The quality of the learning environment has a significant impact on
children
Having daily access to outdoor play and being close to nature is crucial
What do they need to bring to nursery?
Full change of clothes; tops, bottoms, underwear
Indoor shoes
Wellies
Outdoor coat, hat, gloves in winter months
Suncream and sun hat in summer months
Please dress your children in play clothes that you don’t mind getting
messy or dirty. It is important that they access the full nursery
curriculum, so comfortable clothing that washes easily is highly
recommended.
Play Based Curriculum

At Paradykes we aim to implement a child-centred approach to early learning.
A high quality nursery education is about much more than colours, shapes,
numbers and letters. It’s about learning to be confident, enthusiastic and
curious. It’s about developing children’s natural joy and wonder at the world
they live in and fostering an enquiring mind, that is eager to learn and explore.
It’s about having a positive attitude, forming relationships and believing in
yourself.
Young children learn from everything around them, the people, the
environment, the atmosphere, the routine and the opportunities. They are
active learners who learn best by doing things for themselves, by exploring
and investigating, watching and listening, talking and discussing, creating.
We deliver a variety of experiences and opportunities through the 8 areas of
A Curriculum for Excellence:
Health & Wellbeing
Literacy & English
Numeracy & Mathematics
Expressive Arts
Religious & Moral Education
Sciences
Social Studies
Technologies
A Curriculum for Excellence encourages the children to become Successful
Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible
Citizens.
We have what we call continuous provision which is always available (i.e. sand,
water, crafts, paints, story corner, house corner, blocks/construction, ICT,
snack & outdoors) these areas are then enhanced through Seasonal Forward
Planning (adult led-learning intentions) and Responsive Planning, which is
child-led, based on children’s interests or developmental needs.
Settling In

In the best interests of your child and to help ensure a smooth transition, we
ask that all children follow our settling in procedure.
Day 1- with support from their grown up the child will have an hour and a half
visit to meet the staff, familiarise themselves with the nursery building,
garden, routines etc
Day 2- the second visit is for a few hours with the grown up possibly spending
some time out of the playroom
Day 3- all being well the child may be left for a short period on their own for
the morning and join us for lunch (8.30am-12.30am)
Day 4 – subject to previous days experiences day 4 start at 8.30am and end
at 2.00pm
Day 5 – Full time
We tailor our settling in procedure to the individual needs of the child, your
key worker will discuss and agree when it is appropriate for the child to
officially start.
Arriving & Leaving Nursery

We have a ‘soft start’ approach to the start of each session-please arrive
anytime between the first half-hour.
The children should be brought to and collected from nursery by a responsible
adult (over age 16).
If someone different is going to collect your child, please inform a member of
staff and we will agree a password for the adult collecting.
If you need to bring or collect your child out with normal times please inform
staff.
Toys

Whilst we recognise lots of children have special toys/comforters we ask that
you encourage your child to leave other toys at home. We cannot look after
individual items and it can be very upsetting for everyone if a special toy
becomes lost or broken.
Snack

The children are provided with a healthy daily snack and milk and water is
offered.
Snack is ‘open’ for over an hour and a half of the nursery session and children are
free to come at a time of their choosing. They must wash their hands and are
encouraged to post their name to indicate that they have had their snack.
Children are encouraged to be independent and to plan their time. Many
important skills are learned as they pour from a jug, talk to others around the
table, help one another, ‘read’ the menu and count how many pieces they can take!
We ask for a small contribution of £2 a week to help cover the costs, this can be
paid weekly, monthly or termly through our on-line parentpay system. Your Key
Worker will give you details of how to set this up.

Birthdays

A birthday is a special day for young children. We will help celebrate their
special day by making and decorating a birthday cake, singing happy birthday and
making them a special card.
Outings/Trips

During the course of the year we may wish to take groups of children out with
the nursery grounds to visit a place of interest. We will always ask for your
written permission to do this and provide details regarding the nature of the
outing.
From time to time we may need volunteers to help. If you would be interested,
please let us know.
We adhere to very comprehensive Health & Safety Guidelines provided by
Midlothian Council.
Health

If your child is unwell they will be much happier at home.
Please telephone us to inform us of any absence-you will receive a text if your
child has not appeared for nursery when expected.
Sickness & Diarrhoea

In the case of “tummy upsets” it is vital that children stay at home for at least
48 hours after the last incidence of sickness and diarrhoea to prevent it
spreading to others.
If your child receives regular medication for any medical condition such as
asthma, eczema or allergies etc….please let us know and we will discuss their
needs and get you to complete an Individual Care Plan for your child.
Additional Support

At Paradykes we strongly believe in equal opportunities for all children, and we
follow the Additional Support for Learning Act 2006 enabling us to support the
inclusion of children with additional needs. We work closely together as an
integrated team with other professionals/support services to help ensure we
meet your child’s needs.
Child Protection

This nursery is committed to working in partnership with parents. As well as
placing high importance on the safety and protection of children. We have strict
Child Protection Guidelines which all staff must follow where there are concerns
about a child.
If you are having difficulties with looking after your child or are worried about
the care, welfare, or safety of any child please speak to a member of staff.

Complaints Procedure

Please speak openly to our Senior Child Development Workers should you have
any issues or complaints, or alternatively you can ask to speak to Mrs Darryl
Wilson (Depute Head Teacher) who has direct responsibility for the management
of the nursery. We would like in the first instance, the opportunity to discuss
whatever is concerning you and to be able to work together to reach a solution.
