Mr. Wilson, the new teacher at Gorebridge Primary School, is excited to guide the Primary 5 class through a year of learning and growth. The class is diving into topics like the Tropical Rainforest, Scottish Wars of Independence, and comparisons of Scotland with other countries. Across subjects like Literacy, Numeracy, and Social Studies, students will engage in a variety of activities that aim to enhance their skills and knowledge. From reading and writing tasks to math concepts and exploring the wonders of rainforests, this school year promises to be full of discovery and fun for the students of P5W. Health and well-being, along with expressive arts, are also integral parts of the curriculum, ensuring a holistic approach to education.

P5W Term 1
An introduction... Hello parents / carers! My name is Mr. Wilson and I am a new teacher to Gorebridge Primary School. This year I will be taking your child through their Primary 5 journey. I feel the class have settled back into school after such a long absence incredibly well, especially when we consider the circumstances of this year. They amaze me everyday with their willingness to learn. I hope to get to know all of you better by the end of the year and share with you the successes that every child in P5W will make this year. Mr. Wilson.
The year ahead... Our topic focus for each term this year are as follows; Aug-Dec: The Tropical Rainforest Jan-Easter: The Scottish Wars of Independence Easter-June: Comparison of Scotland to another country All of our curricular areas will be linked closely to these topics during the dates detailed above.
Literacy & Languages Reading We will begin by reading our Class Novel Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo. Non-fiction reading skills will be taught using comprehension strategies learned each week. Writing Tasks will linked to Rainforest learning and will cover genre such as fact files, letters, poetry, reports, reflective and imaginative writing. Listening & Talking Children will be asked to prepare a personal talk and deliver in class, discussion of presentations learning, group
Numeracy & Maths Children will work regularly on their Basic Maths Facts as part of their learning. Numeracy learning will focus on place value and understanding number structures. In Maths, children will learn about the properties of 2D and 3D shape and area of 2D shape.
Social Subjects Rainforests: Our learning will focus on the plants and animals that live in the rainforest and how plants are used.
Health & Well Being P.E. will be taught weekly on a Wednesday and Thursday. All P5s will take part in outdoor PE (weather permitting) in a range of different activities that aim to get them moving and trying out different forms of exercise. All of the games and exercises we will be learning will aim to minimise close contact with others and there will be a significant focus on respecting the space of others. Children will also learn about different types of relationships such as those with their peers and adults and how to manage their emotions.
Expressive Arts Our Artwork will be based around the Layers of the Rainforest and the plants and animals that live there.
Outdoor Learning Nature walks to look at plants and animals using our school grounds as their habitat.
RME Children will take part in weekly assemblies. RME is delivered on a Tuesday and the current topic is looking at the food and festivals of different religions.
Science & Technologies This will be linked to the Rainforest as the children study location and biodiversity.
How you can help? I am keen to work in partnership with our families to support learning, behaviour and progress. Please stay in touch If there is an issue, let s discuss this at the earliest possible time. Help your child to stay organised: Reminding your child to complete home learning. Wearing P.E. Kit on P.E. Days (Term 1: Tuesdays and Thursdays) Bringing a water bottle (water only) to school Return letters promptly to School.
Home Learning Children should be completing home learning 4 to 5 times a week. This should include: Spelling Wall practise (10 mins) BMF practise (10 mins) Daily reading (10 mins) Spelling Walls and Basic Maths facts will be available on Seesaw for your child s use. Other Home learning tasks will be set and shared on Seesaw, these will usually be topic related.
