Overview of Organic Agriculture in Europe 2017
Europe has seen a significant increase in organic farmland and retail sales in 2017. With 2.9% of Europe's farmland being organic, totaling 14.6 million hectares, countries like Spain, Italy, and France lead in organic farming. In terms of retail sales, Denmark and Switzerland stand out with high per capita spending on organic food. Germany, France, and Italy are the top European markets for organic food, contributing to the continent's 37.3 billion Euro organic food market.

EUROPE: ORGANIC FARMLAND 2017 2.9% of Europe s farmland is organic (EU 7.2%) +75% in the decade 2008-2017 Europe 14.6 Million ha Spain 2.1 Million ha Over half of Europe s organic farmland is in 4 countries. The country with the largest area of organic farmland is in Spain, followed by Italy and France. Ten countries have 10% or more of their agricultural land under organic management. EUROPE: ORGANIC RETAIL SALES 2017 13.3 % of the food market in Denmark is organic 288 are spent per person in Switzerland Europe 37.3 billion Germany 10 billion The European Union (34.3 billion ) is the second largest single market after the US (40 billion) and China. By region, North America has the lead (43 billion ), followed by Europe and Asia. The European countries with the largest markets for organic food are Germany, France (7.9 billion ), Italy (3.1 billion ), and Switzerland (2.4 billion ). Switzerland has the highest per capita consumption of organic food worldwide, followed by Denmark and Sweden.
