The Decennial Census The purpose is to conduct a census of population and housing and disseminate results to the President, the States and the American People Important Uses of Census data: Apportionment Redistricting Enforcing voting rights and civil rights legislation Distributing$675 Billion (annually) Information for municipal planning, services, resource allocation
2020 Census Key Dates March 2020: April 1, 2020: Delivery of invitations to respond Census Day May July, 2020: Nonresponse Followup March August 2020: Data capture Dec 31, 2020: March 2021: Deliver apportionment counts Deliver redistricting Data April 2021 Sep 2023: Other data and products released on flow basis

Two Categories of Census Geography Legal and Administrative Entities Result from legal actions, treaties, ordinances, and so on. Boundaries generally accepted as provided by appropriate authorities. Statistical Entities Evolve from practice, usage, or need. Boundaries generally delineated using Census Bureau criteria and guidelines
Census Geographic Areas Redistricting data is available for census blocks to build wards
So, what is a Census Block? And why do we care? Census Blocks are bounded on all sides by: Visible Features Invisible Features Streets Local government boundaries (county, city, village, town) Roads Property Lines Streams Imaginary extensions of streets or roads Railroad tracks Wards must follow block boundaries
