The Census of Population and Housing in Sri Lanka has a rich history dating back to 1871, making it the first Population Census in South Asia. The census is conducted every 10 years, except in the 90s, to provide valuable demographic data. Various gazette notifications, including the Census Ordinance and appointments of officials, govern the legal framework of census-taking. The census staff organization involves a hierarchy of roles, from the Superintendent of Census to enumerators. GIS technology is utilized for mapping and digital preparation of Enumeration Areas. The process includes the Master Registry of Census Blocks for identification and distribution of materials, cost estimates, monitoring, and payment schedules.
