Orita: An Initiation into Christian Adulthood

Orita is an African word from the Yoruba tribe meaning crossroad, symbolizing the convergence of meaningful alternatives. The Orita ritual aims to instill young individuals with a sense of responsibility for their moral conduct from a Christian perspective. The process involves workshops for 16-18 year-olds, supported by parents, church, and the community. Ritual requirements include exploring the Black experience, managing budgets, community service, career exploration, relationship guidance, Bible study, and executing the Orita ceremony. Additionally, recommendations involve engaging in educational opportunities, discussing love and relationships, and understanding personal finances and social responsibilities. Orita serves as a bridge for youths to transition into adulthood with purpose and guidance.

9. Parents Role Encourage youth to attend and participate in Orita workshops. Discuss with youth what they did in the workshops. Ensure youth documents in written, video, or artist fashion lessons learned. Email Orita facilitators requirement is complete. 10. Orita Facilitators Role Develop or ensure interactive workshops for youth for each requirement. Solicit persons to participate and help in workshops For example, Seniors for share experiences in Requirement 1, Pastors for Bible Study / Reflection in Requirement 6, etc. Ensure agenda is completed for each workshop and lead the workshops.
