SAPS will protect life and property should the need arise by responding proportionally to such force. SAPS will exercise caution to protect its members without provoking aggression from the protesters.

  14. AFRICAN SOUTH Strategic Guidelines SERVICE POLICE The emphasis is to engage in dialogue to seek a non violent solution The group needs to be monitored but not approached without reason. Reserve forces to be kept a fair distance out of vicinity of the gathering as not to provoke confrontation. Caution must be taken not to search individuals or groups without due vigilance and the necessary cover. Soft skin vehicles need to be kept in reserve, utilising only armored vehicles to near the crowd with no Police members leaving the Nyalas and exposing themselves.

  39. AFRICAN SOUTH Command & Signal SERVICE POLICE The Overall Commanders (PC and Maj Generals) exercise control from the JOC relieving each other as other commitments are dealt with. The Ops Commander (Brig Calitz) regulates movements on the ground at the koppie . The Section Commanders regulate the movements of their teams deployed at the allocated points mentioned. The Common radio channel is 47.
