OHSAA Scholar Athlete Awards and Recognition Programs
The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) offers various awards to recognize and honor students who excel not only in athletics but also in academics, sportsmanship, integrity, and courage. These awards include the Scholar Athlete Award for seniors with outstanding academic and athletic achievements, the NFHS Award of Excellence for exemplary sportsmanship, the Courageous Student Award for those who have overcome challenges, and the Archie Griffin Award for displaying exemplary sportsmanship traits. These programs aim to celebrate and promote qualities essential for success both on and off the field.

OHSAA SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD The Scholar Athlete Award exemplifies the commitment that the OHSAA has dedicated to academic excellence while participating in interscholastic athletics. The guidelines as approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors are as follows: Award recipient must be a senior. Highest scholastic average at the end of the first semester of grade 12. Recipient must receive a minimum of four varsity letters in all sports combined.
OHSAA/NFHS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE The National Federation of High School s Board of Directors and NFHS Citizenship Committee has permitted each OHSAA member high school to award the NFHS National Award of Excellence to one male and one female senior student who has displayed exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. This award is to be presented to a student in your school who has exhibited qualities that embody good citizenship, good moral character, and good sporting behavior.
OHSAA COURAGEOUS STUDENT AWARD The Ohio High School Athletic Association continues to disseminate a CourageousStudent award to be made available to every OHSAA member high school. Each high school may present this certificate to one deserving individual in their local school. Consideration is given to a student who either currently has, or who has overcome, a serious illness, injury, or disability, a student who has overcome great adversity, and/or extraordinary circumstances of hardship.
OHSAA ARCHIE GRIFFIN AWARD Sportsmanship, ethics and integrity are essential components of any successful athletic program. As part of an ongoing program to promote Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity, the Ohio High School Athletic Association would like to recognize students who display exemplary sportsmanship. This award is named for Archie Griffin. Mr. Griffin is an Ohio native, the only two-time recipient of the Heisman Trophy for football, and as a professional athlete, he always displayed exemplary sportsmanship. Mr. Griffin, current CEO of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, has been active in promoting sportsmanship, ethics and integrity for many years. He was honored in 1998 as the recipient of the prestigious OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award.
OHSAA EXEMPLARY SERVICE AWARD The Ohio High School Athletic Association has established an annual state Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award to be made available to every OHSAA member high school. This adult award may be presented to a coach, teacher, administrator, booster, or supporter of the school program. It is an opportunity for every member high school in Ohio to honor one of their own with this prestigious state award.
LONGHORN LONGEVITY AWARD The Longhorn Longevity Award will be given to any senior athlete who has competed in 12 seasons or more during their four years at Lutheran West.
KAREN WITTROCK CHRISTIAN SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD ROBERT LUECKE MEMORIAL CHRISTIAN SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Any junior or senior student-athlete is eligible for nomination by the Athletic Council These awards are given to the student-athletes who best exemplify the ideals of Christian Sportsmanship in both word and deed. One male athlete will receive the Robert Luecke Memorial Sportsmanship Award and one female athlete will receive the Karen Wittrock Christian Sportsmanship Award. The recipients are chosen by the Athletic Council.
THE JOSEPH KING IMPACT AWARD The Joseph King Impact Award will be awarded to one male and one female athlete each year that meets the criteria and is nominated by a head coach. Similar to Joe King, these individuals have made a lasting impact on multiple sports they have been a part of over their athletic career at Lutheran West. The following six criteria must be met to be nominated by a head coach: Multiple Sport Athlete Senior Good Academic Standing Attitude and Work Ethic Leadership Skills Ambassador for Lutheran West
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR The Athlete of the Year Award will be awarded to one male and one female athlete who accumulates the highest point total at the end of the spring sports season for the sports they have participated in. Points can be accumulated in the following five categories: OHSAA Post-season Series and Accolades Conference Accolades Inner-team Accolades School Records GPA Team qualifying points will be awarded by the committee after discussion with the head coach to confirm that the participant is a contributing member of the varsity team.
