Numbers play an important role in mathematics.
 In day to day life we denote time of the day, the month
the date by a  number only.
 We have studied about counting numbers in primary
classes. Here we will have the idea of larger numbers.

DIGITS
 
 The symbols 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 that are used
to write a numeral are called digits.
A combination of  these 10 digits are used to form a
number.
Example:
    (a) 34 is a 
2
-digit number.
    (b) 4079 is a 
4
-digit number.
     (c) 12999 is a 
5
-digit number.

Remember
   Numbers with less number of digits is
lesser than the number with more number of digits.

Look for the most             Look for the   left digit

                                     Greatest number …………………9100
                                     Remember
 : Here comparison is done by
                                                       comparing the left most digit.

  5. COMPARING NUMBERS Symbols used for comparision Greater than equal to > less than (smaller than) < Equal to = Not equal to

  6. RULES OF COMPARISION If the two numbers have a different number of digits then the number with the larger number of digits is greater. If the two numbers have an equal number of digits then follow these steps: Compare the digits at the leftmost place in both the numbers. If both the numbers have the same digit at the leftmost place, compare their second digit from the left If the first as well as the second digit from the left are equal then compare their third digit from the left.

  7. EXAMPLE Which number is smallest and which is greatest: 419, 100, 3452, 45233, 22 Smallest number .. 23 Greatest number ..45233 Remember Numbers with less number of digits is lesser than the number with more number of digits.

  9. SOLVED EXAMPLES Eg.1- which is greater: 24576813 or 9897686? Sol.- A number with more digits is greater so, 24576813 > 9897686 Eg.2 - which is smaller: 1003467 or 987965? Sol.- A number with less digits is smaller so, 1003467 < 9897965 Example
