NIOS: National Institute of Open Schooling The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organization in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through itsOpen Basic Education Programmes (OBE). Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it up to pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/ 25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.

  3. Advantages of NIOS No need to attend regular classes. NIOS offers weekly classes through the study centre. The syllabus is easy to understand. NIOS gives a higher percentage to a student with flexible NCERT syllabus. Board Provides NIOS learning materials in digital mode, video lecturers etc Flexibility is the core value of NIOS-May it be an on-demand exam or two-time exam in a year. NIOS also offers the facility to appear for exam same year in October if you fail in the main exam in Mar-Apr. Yes, this is valid for all government job applications and higher education.

  4. Disadvantages of NIOS The major disadvantage of this board is that students cannot clear their doubts on the spot. They have to wait surely till their visit to weekly classes or from other sources. It decreases the interaction among teachers and students. NIOS needs to focus on query resolution centre, this is a major drawback.

  5. Who should go For NIOS? Have other priorities. Want to earn and learn Dropouts Upgrade themselves or want to improve their score.

Eligibility Criteria For Secondary Course The minimum age to take admission in the Secondary Course is 14 years as on 31st July of Current year (for details, see prospectus) A learner giving a self-certificate "I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course" is also eligible for admission to the Secondary Course. A learner who had studied at the secondary level can also seek admission in NIOS either to complete his course or to improve his performance.

  8. Eligibility Criteria For Sr. Secondary Course The minimum age to take admission in the Senior Secondary Course is 15 years. As on 31st July of Current year (for details, see prospectus) In order to take admission in the Senior Secondary course, the learner must have passed the Secondary course from a recognized Board. Student failed in Class XI can also apply.

Fee payment mode for Online Fee payment mode for Online Admission Admission There will be two options for the payment of fee (A)The fee can be deposited Online through Credit Card /Debit Card/Net Banking. (B) In case admission is done through Common Services Centres, fee could be paid via Electronic Wallet of CSCs. Note: In addition to above Fee, Rs. 50/-(Rs. Fifty Only) will be added as cost of online Application Form for allStreams (Stream 1, 2, 3 and 4). NOTE: Kindly note that the fee payment is to be made online only. No Bank Draft/Demand Draft/Cash/Cheque or any other mode of fee payment is acceptable. All CSC and NIOS AIs (Study Centres) are authorized for facilitating the learners to take admission online. There are no other Agencies/Cybercafe/any other institutions recognized by NIOS for doing Online Admission.

Supporting Documents Supporting Documents required required The learner has to be ready with the Scanned copy/soft copy (jpg, jpeg files) of the given below documents which will be required to be uploaded while registering for the Admission to Secondary and Senior Secondary courses Recent Passport size color Photograph Signature (preferably in Black Ink) Valid identity proof (like Aadhaar Card or Passport or Ration card or etc.) Valid proof of Date of Birth (like Aadhaar Card with date of birth printed on it in the dd/mm/yyyy format, Birth Certificate etc.) A valid proof of Residence (like Aadhaar Card with complete address printed on it, valid Passport etc.). Address proof i.e. Aadhaar Card/Water Bill/Electricity Bill/Voter ID/Ration Card/Indian

  17. Supporting Documents Supporting Documents required required Passport/Statement of Operational Bank Account/Appointment Letter from the Employer on Printed Letter Head, if living in rented accommodation - copy of any proof of permanent address along with present Rented Agreement. Class 8th marksheet (in case of secondary course) or class 10th marksheet (in case of senior secondary course)Social category/Caste certificate (in case the learner belongs to SC/ST/OBC social category). Ex-serviceman certificate (in case he/she is an Ex-serviceman) Disability certificate (in case he/she is having any kind of disability) Fail Mark sheet of previous Board, failing which Transfer of Credit (TOC) marks will not be updated in NIOS result. If TOC Board marked with (*Other) is selected then the Result should be available on the Concerned Board Website or Learner has to submit result verification letter from Concerned Board as per NIOS norms.

  18. Transfer of Credit (TOC) Transfer of Credit (TOC) Ex-Secondary/Senior Secondary learners of the following Boards of School Education who have passed in at least one subject, but have not qualified in the course, may seek admission in the respective course at NIOS and avail facility of TOC. A learner should seek Transfer of Credits (TOC) at the time of admission in the subjects which are included in NIOS scheme of studies. The learners who had applied for Transfer of Credit (TOC) have to send original failed marksheet mentioning the Reference Number on the back of Mark Sheet to the concerned Regional Centre.

  19. Dual Enrollment and Part Dual Enrollment and Part Admission Admission Under this provision, if in case a learner is studying in a regular school, or has already passed Secondary/ Senior Secondary examination or any other higher course from any recognised Board/University, he/she may opt for uptofour subjects of his/her choice, to update knowledge and educational qualifications. However, on passing, only the Marksheet will be issued and no other Certificate will be issued. The entry requirement for dual enrolment and part admission will be as per NIOS admission rules (Table-3 Entry Requirements).

  20. Other Instructions for online Admission After successful submission of Online Application Form for Admission to Stream 1 Block 1, you will get a confirmation on your email address and Mobile Number submitted during registration process. You can make the Payment during the registration process or you can also make the payment later by login into Student Panel using the user name and password sent to you in your email. After successful payment of the Admission fee, you will be communicated through email with payment receipt. You can also print/download your payment receipt and your Application Form from your dashboard after login. Study Material/Books from NIOS will be sent to you within 15 working days after receipt of the payment to NIOS. You don't have to make any additional payment to the postal department or the postman handing over the Study Material/Books to you. Your will be able to see the Tracking ID of your study material.

Other Instructions for online Other Instructions for online Admission Admission If required by NIOS management or if any discrepancy is found in the submitted online application form, you may have to submit the printed application form along with the documents and photograph which will be communicated to you through email and SMS. After successful verification of the required documents/photo uploaded during registration, you will get a confirmation on your email address and Mobile Number along with the Enrolment Number. You will be able to print/download your Identity Card (ID Card) from your dashboard after login only after the admission is confirmed and the Enrolment Number is generated. Keep visiting nios.ac.in or sdmis.nios.ac.in for updates. Check your emails and mobile SMS regularly for updates.
