New trends in agriculture extension
Privatization of extension
Promoting private extension and privatization of extension services are two approaches used by national
governments world wide to  improve the delivery of  extension services.
Private extension is not a single entity, but includes a wide range of service providers.
Private Extension: entirely private and they use their own revenue stop remote technologies, inputs and
services. Most of the private profit  oriented actors belong to this category.
Privatization of extension services :Consists of organizations that receive funds from government and
other donors for implementing extension programmes and they are mostly of the "not-for profit“ type
Private extension indicates the extension  activities of private individuals or organizations,
Privatizations is a public policy decision taken by the Government to reduce its role in an
activity and encourages private sector to take up these roles.
Privatization of extension can take place broadly in two ways:
i) Dismantling privatization
ii) Controlled privatization
Cyber extension
ICT or Information and Communications Technology
The basket of technologies, which assist or support in storage, processing of Data/ Information, or in
dissemination/ communication of Data/ Information, or both.
ICT thus includes technologies such as desktop and laptop computers, software, peripherals and connection to the
Internet that are intended to fulfill information processing and communication functions.

MARKET–LED EXTENSION
With globalization of the market, farmers need to transform themselves from mere producers-sellers in the
domestic market to producers cum sellers in a wider market sense to best  realize the returns on their
investments, risks and efforts.
NEED
Conversion of P-L-E into M-L-E
Orientation of extension system with knowledge and skills related to the market. Minimization of production
cost.
Introduction of export oriented product.
Modernization of wholesale markets or new markets with new Agricultural policy.
Objective
1.Conversion of agricultural sector into profit oriented business
2.Strengthening R-E-F linkages –between various department at various levels.
3.Strengthening market linkages to farmers –IT application in Agricultural marketing.
4.Wider use of electronic mass media for Agricultural Extension.
FARMERS FIELD SCHOOL
A group of farmers meet regularly in a field at weekly intervals during a crop season. After observation
of crop dynamics, they discuss and take economical decisions about the best crop management practices
for that week, under the guidance of trained facilitator.
NEED for FF
S:
•Inappropriate and imbalanced nutrient use and declining soil productivity
•Indiscriminate use of pesticides leading to increased cost of cultivation
•Inadequate research and extension support to Small & Marginal farmers
Objectives of FFS
:
1.Increasing the productivity of crops receiving irrigation through  Field demonstrations and training
programmes.
2.Growing of crops as per the prevailing market trend / need.
3.Reducing cost of cultivation by adopting  improved management practices and procuring the
critical inputs in time –community based approach.
4.Finally making farmer ‘an Expert’ in decision making.
