What do you already know about how the Nazi’s viewed
women?

Think about the way their lives changed during the ‘Golden
Years’ and what Hitler said about this.
Also, how did Hitler use women in his campaign trails?
How successful were Nazi policies towards
women?
What did the ideal Nazi
woman look like?
Draw a stick figure in the
centre of your page and
annotate it as we watch the
video to show the ideal Nazi
woman.

Nazi policies towards women focused on four main areas:
Reduce the number of women working
Promote Aryan women to have as many children as possible
Encourage women to keep their bodies pure and healthy
Promote Aryan women to marry pure Aryan men.
You need to read the Nazi policies on each of these four aims and add
notes to your worksheet (slide 6) on how the Nazi’s tried to achieve
these aims.

Choose one of the aims above
and then create one of the

is important to achieve this

‘Ten Commandments for Choice of Spouse’ (advice issued to
women by Nazis)
1.
Remember that you are a German.
2.
If you are genetically healthy, you should not remain
unmarried
3.
Keep your body pure.
4.
You should keep your mind and spirit pure.
5.
As a German, choose only a spouse of the same or Nordic
blood.
6.
In choosing a spouse, ask about his ancestors.
7.
Health is also a preconditions for physical beauty.
8.
Marry only for love.
9.
Don’t look for a playmate but for a companion for marriage.
10.
Hope for as many children as possible! Your duty is to
produce at least four offspring in order to ensure the future
of the national stock.
When Hitler came to power in 1933, he
introduced a ‘Law for the Encouragement of
Marriage’. The law said that the government
would give all newly married couples a loan of
1000 marks (about nine months wages).

It is the mission of woman to minister in
the home to the needs of life from the first
to the last moment of man’s existence. Her
mission in marriage.. Is helper and
womanly complement of man – this is the
right of woman in the New Germany.
Gertrude Scholtz- Klink, Head of the
Nazi Women’s organisation
‘A German women does not use make-up!
A German woman does not smoke!
A German woman has a duty to keep herself fit and healthy
for having children!’
Copied from the rule book for the BDM (Nazi youth group
for girls)
Hitler writing in
Mein Kampf
“In the education of girls in the German state
the emphasis must be placed on physical
education…. The one goal always kept in mind
when educating girls is that some day they aim
to be mothers.”
‘The most unnatural thing we
see on the streets is a German
woman, who, ignoring all laws
of beauty, has painted her
face with Oriental war paint!’
From a Nazi newspaper
Girls in the Nazi
youth group, the
BDM, had their heads
shaved if they had a
perm!
Lebensborn Programme 1939
The Nazi government even set up homes for
unmarried mothers. These were called
Lebensborn - Spring of Life - and
recognised by a white flag with a red dot in the
middle. These maternity homes were also
brothels. An unmarried woman could go there
with the aim of becoming pregnant and would be
introduced to ‘racially pure’ SS men.

Women in Nazi Germany found themselves being
forced to stay at home. Within months of Hitler
coming to power, many intelligent women like
doctors and civil servants were sacked. Soon
women lawyers and teachers were dismissed. By
1939 few women had professional jobs.

‘Kinder, Kirche und Kuche’
The Nazis used this phrase to put
across what was expected for women
was: This meant, ‘children, church and
cooking’ - what the Nazis believed
women should be limited to.
Take hold of the kettle, broom
and pan,
Then you’ll surely get a man!
Shop and office leave alone,
Your true life work lies at
home.”
Source 3 – A German children’s rhyme.

The Nazis assumed there was a natural
distinction between men and women. They
stated that men were productive and creative
in the world of politics and war whereas
women were reproductive, and had their
important role in the family home.
The slogan "emancipation of women" was
invented by Jewish intellectuals. We do not
consider it correct for the women to interfere
in the work world of the man. Her work lies at
home, caring for her family. We consider it
natural if these two worlds remain distinct.
Adolf Hitler in a speech in 1935
Hitler and the Nazi Party
paid great attention to
women during the
elections.

Why do you think Hitler felt
women were so important
to their fight for power?

Nazi policies towards women aimed to control and manipulate their roles in society, focusing on reducing women in the workforce, promoting Aryan reproduction, emphasizing purity and health, and encouraging Aryan marriage. These policies restricted women's freedoms and autonomy, enforcing strict guidelines on their behavior and appearance, ultimately serving the Nazi regime's ideology of racial purity and societal control.
