Dividing Fractions
Objective:
divide fractions and solve problems by dividing fractions.
Suppose you have three large pizzas and you want to divide them into eighths. How many pieces would you have?
This model helps us see how we can divide a whole number by a fraction.
Each circle is divided into eights. You have 24 pieces.
So, 3 ÷ 1/8 = 24 pieces.

When you divide a whole number by 1/2, you get
double the number.
When you multiply a number by 2, you get double the
whole number.

What do you notice about:
How are dividing by 1/2 and multiplying by 2 related?
Multiplication and division are inverse operations

To divide a fraction, multiply by the reciprocal of the fraction. You can remember this by thinking “invert and multiply.”

In Mrs. S. Whitaker's math class, students engaged in various activities such as DEAR time, GCF and LCM practice, dividing fractions, and exploring concepts like reciprocals. The lesson included practical examples like dividing pizzas to understand fractions better. Students also learned about the relationship between division and multiplication, as well as how to find reciprocals of numbers.
