Moses and the Rock of Stumbling - A Lesson in Obedience
In Numbers 20:1-13, Moses and Aaron face a test of obedience as they are commanded to bring forth water from a rock in the wilderness. Instead of speaking to the rock as instructed, Moses strikes it in anger, leading to consequences of disobedience. This event serves as a powerful lesson on the importance of following God's commands and trusting in His provision.

Moses and the Rock of Stumbling Understanding the relationship between Faith and Obedience
Faith and Obedience Moses and the Rock (Num.20:12, 24) 12Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.
23And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron saying: 24"Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah.
23And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron saying: 24"Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah.
Faith and Obedience Israel s failure to enter the promised land (Josh.5:6) For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD
Faith and Obedience Israel s failure to enter the promised land (Josh.5:6) For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD (Heb.3:18-19) 18And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Faith and Obedience Synecdoche the part put for the whole o (Jn.3:14-16) 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Faith and Obedience Synecdoche the part put for the whole o (Jn.3:36) 36He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. (ASV)
Faith and Obedience Living, saving faith is always coupled or joined with obedience o (Jas.2:17, 20,24-26) Obedience to God s revealed will is the demonstration of living faith o (Jas.2:18,21-23) (Rom.1:5; 16:26)
Faith and Obedience Disobedience to God s revealed will is the demonstration of a lack of living, saving faith (Heb.3:15-19) o It is in this sense that Moses did not believe o It was demonstrated by his rebellion to God s word (Num.20:11-12, 24) o you did not believe Me, to hallow Me
Faith and Obedience It is the synergy between faith and obedience that saves the sinner o For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. (Gal.5:6) The synergy between the body and the spirit is the illustration o For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (Jas.2:26)
Faith and Obedience Abraham s steps of the faith (Rom.4:12) o and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised. o This was Abraham s obedience to God s revealed will for him and thus the demonstration of his living, saving faith o This is precisely what it means to walk (action, obedience, steps) by faith (2Cor.5:7)
