  1. Organization Day! Let s Get Organized to WRITE!

  2. Step 1: Get out your brainstorm The ideas for evidence you ve listed and the more specific topical questions you ve written is where you will start trying to organize your paper You will want to have a new blank sheet of paper or your computer with a new doc ready If you were ABSENT yesterday, pick up a graphic organizer from the front table

  3. Step 2: Make a linear list of subtopics Topical Question: How do Siddhartha and Gregor find meaning in their lives given their circumstances? Subtopic 1: Gregor s home life and circumstances -Family situation with his paying for them (setting) -Not having any time for friends or socialization -Feeling bitter at his boss and work (exposition) Subtopic 2: Siddhartha s home life and circumstances -Everyone in town loves and admires him (exposition) -His parents are proud of him but expect a lot of him (his father) -He is allowed to leave when he decides he is unhappy with his life (external conflict) Subtopic 3: Gregor s search for meaning (plot) Subtopic 4: Siddhartha s search for meaning (plot) Subtopic 5: Gregor s demise and death (resolution) Subtopic 6: Siddhartha s turning point and enlightenment (turning point and resolution)

Step 3: Write a claim (thesis) Example Claims: Gregor and Siddhartha are both searching for meaning in their lives, yet circumstances of personal freedoms, limited for the former and unlimited for the latter, lead to vastly different conclusions, death and enlightenment. Orwell demonstrates and warns that the manipulation of language leads to the abuse of power through his characters use of slogans, songs and poetry, diction, and pathos in his allegorical novels 1984 and Animal Farm.

  5. Write your topic sentences See Analytical Sentence Outline Handout

  6. Add textual support (bulleted) under the appropriate subtopic/topic sentence Don t forget to CITE Author and page number for novels (Hurston 45). Author, title, and page number for 2 novels by the same author (Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God 34). Author for literary analysis articles (James).

  7. Homework: Find textual support and categorize it (code it if needed in color or with symbols/letters/numbers) Write claim (working thesis) and topic sentences to complete your analytical sentence outline Everyone should have a minimum of 4 subtopics and body paragraphs so the outlines should include a minimum of 5 total sentences including the claim Outlines NEED to include textual evidence but can also include comments or ideas bulleted under each section DUE FRIDAY BRING ALL MATERIALS BLOCK DAY FOR A WORK DAY!
