Pronoun Case and Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive pronouns are the “-self” pronouns
Myself
Yourself
Himself
Herself
Ourselves
Themselves

Why use reflexive pronouns?

The reflexive case of a pronoun is used to indicate a
reflexive action, an action affecting the one who
performs it.
There is a tendency for writers and speakers to use
the reflexive case of the first person pronoun
(
myself
) when they are unsure whether the
subjective or objective case is proper.

Common Errors

Reflexive pronouns should not be used to substitute
for personal pronouns.
Incorrect
: Contact Dante or
myself
 if you need a
photographer.
Correct
: Contact Dante or
me

if you need a photographer.

Incorrect
: The responsibilities will be divided between you
and
myself
.
Correct
: The responsibilities will be divided between you
and
me
.

Correct Use of Reflexive Pronouns

I am very proud of
myself
 for having worked hard to
receive this award.
As president of this company, I am giving
myself
 a
raise.

The above examples work because the personal
pronoun
I
is present before its reflexive pronoun
myself

is used.

That’s all, folks!
