Maritime school 4thyear Direct: maritime engineer 12/9/2024
The main subjects Marine engines 1. 2. Ship's electricity 3. Ship s systems 4. Ship s auxiliary machines and devices 5. Ship automation 6. Marine boilers 7. Maritime English 8. Safety at Sea 12/9/2024
Marine engines Four-stroke engine It is an internal combustion engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning a crankshaft. Intake ( In this stroke the intake valve is open, making fresh mixture of air and fuel.) Compression ( The intake valve is closed, piston is at the top dead centerand compressing the fuel/air mixture.) Combustion ( both of valves are closed, the compressed air-fuel mixture is ignited by heat generated by high compression) Exhaust ( Exhaust valve is open, the piston s action expels the spent air-fuel mixture through the exhaust valve.) 1. 2. 3. 4. return return 12/9/2024
Ship's electricity On board there are two sources of electrical power: 1. Generator 2. Battery Generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Sources of mechanical energy include: 1. steam turbines, 2. gas turbines, 3. water turbines, 4. internal combustion engines. On board are used the following: 1. Shaft generator, 2. Turbo generator and 3. Emergency generator. return return 12/9/2024
Ships systems On board there are a lot of systems serving the main engine: The fuel system is a system in which the fuel is loaded, stocked, prepared and then used in the engine. A lubrication system of an engine provides a supply of lubricating oil to the various moving parts in the engine. Cooling system- Cooling system cools the engine parts. Sea water/ fresh water. Air system- Include starting air, service air and control air. 1. 2. 3. 4. return return 12/9/2024
Ships auxiliary machines and devices Marine machinery is designed to ensure the proper functioning of a ship s main engines, piping systems, and equipment. Auxiliary marine machinery includes pumps, compressors, and blowers for circulating fuel and the fresh water and seawater used in cooling systems, for supplying air to the starting system of the main engine, for cooling refrigerated holds, and for air-conditioning various parts of the ship and for refrigeration machinery. Auxiliary marine machinery also includes separators for removing water and other contaminants from fuel and oil, steering machinery, windlasses, winches for anchoring, mooring, cargo loading, and cranes. Other items include heat exchangers used to condense steam and to heat and cool working fluids, such as water, oil, and air, filters for the seawater and fuel supplies, and separators for bilge water. return return 12/9/2024
Ship automation On a ship there are many parameters that need to be controlled including: temperatures, pressure, level, viscosity, flow control, position of vessel, speed, torque control, voltage, current, machinery status (on/ off). Control, Alarm and monitoring system (CAMS) (CAMS is a simple control, alarm and monitoring system for all types of ships.) Valve Remote Control system (VRCS) (VRCS is a complete system for valve management and control on all types of ships. Together with the measuring system, it provides a solution for fluid control.) return return 12/9/2024
Marine boilers One of the most important items of equipment aboard ships, boilers are used for numerous purposes. The main job of a boiler is to make high pressure steam. The feed water supplied to the boiler drum utilizes the heat of the energy released by burning the fuel. The process of steam generation starts when the feed water enters the steam drum through both internal tubes and the tubes that surround the furnace. return return 12/9/2024
Maritime English Maritime English includes all professional terms on board. To be safe at sea you need to be able to communicate effectively in English. This maritime English course has been specifically designed with seafarers or mariners in mind. By Learning Maritime English we should expect to: 1. Speak more confidently and clearly in English 2. Know how to use and pronounce English maritime communication phrases 3. Communicate better with other seafarers / crew / mariners 4. Prevent accidents Return 12/9/2024
Safety at Sea Types Conventions on safety at sea: 1. SOLAS -International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. 2. STCW - International Convention on Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 3. SAR- Search and Rescue Convention 4. MARPOL- is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes. return 12/9/2024
