A Farewell Admonition John 14-16 Teachings of Jesus (62)
Background The stage has been set for His crucifixion Likely this message was presented when gathered and the Lord s Supper was instituted (Matthew 26:26-29, etc.) He had demonstrated service (John 13) He had announced His betrayal (John 13:18-37) A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Background Our text much can be learned from this farewell address. Today, we notice a few themes found throughout A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Accessing to the Father Jesus came to this earth to grant access to the Father. We have addressed this in previous studies, but this sermon highlights some points. Consider John 14:1-7, He is the Way, Truth and Life, and only access to the Father 14:9-10, He has declared the Father to us, in Him (cf. Immanuel Matthew 1:23) A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Accessing to the Father Jesus came to this earth to grant access to the Father. Consider John 14:11-14, He notes the apostles would do greater works than He had done 15:14-17, they were His friends, chosen by Him for this work 16:27, they were loved because of their love A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The need for love Love is a foundational quality we all need. Matthew 22:37-40, it is a quality of the greatest commandments 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, without it, our words and works are mere noise to Him It is fundamental in every relationship we are in as Christians. A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The need for love Love in this admonition John 13:34-35, a new commandment. The world is watching 14:15, if you love Him, you will keep His commandments (cf. 1 John 4:19, 5:3) 14:21-24, further emphasizes this. But also notes that God will love us. We are His family (1 Peter 1:4) A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The need for love Love in this admonition John 15:9-10, Jesus showed His love by keeping His commands (1 Peter 2:22-23 our example) 15:10, in obedience, you abide in His love (ongoing) 15:12-13, Jesus showed His love in dying for us (Romans 5:6-9) Are we willing to sacrifice? 1 John 3:16, 4:11 A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Our text helps us understand the workings of the Holy Spirit. While we might not understand everything about His work, in this discourse Jesus noted how the Holy Spirit would be instrumental in revealing His will to us through the apostles. Without the Holy Spirit, we would not fully understand God 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 As far as we are concerned, we cannot separate His working from His word A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 14:16-18, He would send another Helper that would abide forever. It was based upon obedience (vs. 15) Helper or comforter this is how He works. We need to be led by Him Romans 8:14. He intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26) John 14:17 He is the Spirit of truth 14:18 He would not leave them orphans A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 14:25-26, He would teach them all things and remind them 15:26-27, He would bear witness and confirm cf. Matthew 10:17-20, - consider also miracles (John 5:36, Hebrews 2:4) - truly they were not alone A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 16:7, it was to their advantage that Jesus go away, so that the Helper could come. Why? - They wanted a physical kingdom (cf. John 18:36, Acts 1:6) - Jesus is now reigning in heaven - He intercedes for us 1 John 2:1, Hebrews 7:25, 4:15-16 A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 16:8-11, He will convict the world. The Holy Spirit will change the world. Cf. Acts 2:37 - of sin because they do not believe. God s word exposes sin. AND they will have no excuse (Hebrews 4:12) - of righteousness because Jesus would go to the Father. Jesus was raised and ascended showing His righteousness. Revealed in scripture, e.g. Sermon on the Mount, Romans, etc. A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 16:8-11, He will convict the world. - of judgment ultimately men will stand before God and answer for sin and righteous conduct. They will be judged by His word (John 12:48, Revelation 20:12, 2 Thessalonians 1:8) A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Jesus promised a helper John 16:13-15, He will guide you into all truth. He will tell you all things and glorify Jesus - through the Holy Spirit, the apostles would better understand Jesus. Luke 24:45 tells us after He arose that Jesus opened their understanding. We understand Jesus better because of the teachings of the apostles! Cf. 2 Peter 1:3 A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Some lessons: Understand, these verses directed primarily to the apostles we do NOT receive revelation today. Cf. Acts 1:4-8, 2:1-4. The NT is a product of their work as guided by the Holy Spirit Matthew 10:18-20, Galatians 1:11-12, Ephesians 3:3-4 2 Peter 1:19-21, Cf. 2 Peter 1:3 We simply benefit from their efforts! A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
The Helper Some lessons: Never underestimate the power of the gospel, because of the Holy Spirit Romans 1:16, Hebrews 4:12, etc. A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Faithfulness, even in trials Another key theme was encouragement to endure. Jesus knew what they were about to face. He sought to encourage them John 15:18-25, they would be hated, but so was Jesus. But they were not of this world - 15:19 And they were not greater than Him 15:20 The world will be judged by God and be without excuse, 15:21-25, cf. Romans 1:20, James 4:17 A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Faithfulness, even in trials Another key theme was encouragement to endure. Jesus knew what they were about to face. He sought to encourage them John 16:1, words written so they not stumble. His word is able to keep us from falling Acts 20:32 16:2-3, they would be persecuted by those thinking they were doing the right thing. A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
Faithfulness, even in trials Encouragement to endure. John 16:4, remember these things. Remembrance helps! 16:16-28, concluding remarks of encouragement and hope. Though they were now experiencing sorrow, it would turn to joy. Troubles can make you stronger James 1:2-4, Romans 5:3-4 A Farewell Admonition John 14-16
In conclusion, These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
Do the words of Jesus encourage you? How are you responding?
