  2. INTRODUCTION Part of our responsibility as followers of Jesus is to use our influence to lead others to follow Jesus. We do this in different ways, according to our spiritual gifts. Some of us may be administrators, many of us are parents, teachers and so on. But unless you have been living in an isolated cave for years, and have been with no one during that time, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE. 2

  3. INTRODUCTION Whatever your sphere of influence, be it family, or work, knowing and learning how your master led will make you a better leader. A better leader can only be defined by his or her followers . And followers by a good leader. 3

  4. JESUS LEADERSHIP LESSONS CONFIRMED TO LEADERSHIP 1. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP 2. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP 3. PROBLEMS OF LEADERSHIP 4. FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP 5. 4

  6. CONFIRMED TO LEADERSHIP CONFIRMATION OF LEADERSHIP God (Mark 9:2-8 this is my beloved Son listen to Him ) John the Baptist (John 1:32-34 this is the Son of God ) Jesus Himself (John 5:36 the Father hath sent me ) Holy Spirit (Mark 1:10 like a dove) Scripture (John 5:39 testify of me ) Miracles (Luke 7:22 tell John what things you have seen and heard ) Disciples (John 6:68 you have the words of eternal life ) 6

  7. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGE PREDECESSORS Great leaders acknowledge the giants who preceded them Every true leader is a product of parenting, teaching, coaching, mentoring, and guiding that has gone before. Great leaders give credit where credit is due 7

  8. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP THE LEADER AS SHEPHERD Good shepherds know their sheep. Good leaders know their followers 8

  9. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP THE LEADER AS SHEPHERD The Shepherd knew His sheep Met their immediate needs-(Ps 23) Protection ( security) (Ps 23:4) Dies for His followers ( John 10:10) Knowing them by name vs 14 Their struggles (Judas) Their strengths (Phil 1:6) 9

  10. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP MAN S RULES VS GOD S PRINCIPLES Authentic leaders place God s principles ahead of human customs 10

  11. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP MAN S RULES VS GOD S PRINCIPLES Mar 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. 11

  12. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP MAN S RULES VS GOD S PRINCIPLES Jesus put the emphasis back where it belongs- on Compassion Love Faithfulness to others and Obedience to God Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. 12

  13. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP COURAGE In servant leadership I can have courage for every battle 13

  14. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP COURAGE Luk 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Courage is not the lack of fear. But courageous people accept the risk, feel the fear, and do what is right anyway 14

  15. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP GENTLENESS Only the leader who is truly strong can be truly gentle 15

  16. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP GENTLENESS Three ingredients to being gentle Be kind (considerate) Be submissive (power under control) Be teachable 16

  17. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP GENTLENESS A gentle leader is smart but feels no need to prove it, strong but feels no need to demonstrate it, confident but feels no need to tear others down 17

  18. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP GENEROSITY Authentic leaders give generously Sharing: Time/Attention Wisdom/ Experience In God s economy, we never lose by giving. We only gain" 18

  19. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP TRUTHFULL AND LOYAL Authentic leaders love the truth and they speak the truth in love Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. As leaders our commitment to the truth must be absolute and unswerving 19

  20. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP LOYAL Authentic leaders are faithful and reliable Joh 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. 20

  21. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP LOYAL Men are wanted who will watch for souls as they that must give an account. Fathers and mothers in Israel are wanted at this important post. Let the selfish and self- caring, the stingy, covetous souls, find a location where their miserable traits of character will not be so conspicuous. The more isolated such ones are, the better for the cause of God. I appeal to the people of God, wherever they may be found: Awake to your duty. Take it to heart that we are really living amid the perils of the last days. Testimonies for the Church 2:467, 468. 21

  22. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP FORGIVENESS Authentic leaders forgive, because they have been forgiven 22

  23. QUALITIES OF LEADERSHIP FORGIVENESS Suggestions towards a more forgiving spirit: Self-examination be honest to myself as to why I find it difficult to forgive Prayer pray for those who have hurt me Expectation expect God to use my wounds for His glory. Use my hurt to make me a better servant. Use the mistreatment I suffer to enable me to understand others and empathize with their hurts. To heal me and help me to forgive. 23

  24. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP POWER Authentic leaders derive their greatest power from obeying God and serving others 24

  25. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP POWER In leadership power is the ability to influence, inspire, or induce behavior in others . A leader who loves his God and His people will never manipulate or exploit people. He will only seek what is best for them 25

  26. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP POWER Let all God s servants, from those occupying the highest positions, to those in the lowliest service, walk humbly before Him. Manuscript 140, 1902. 26

  27. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP EGO Authentic leaders are secure in Jesus Christ and have no need to protect or defend their egos 27

  28. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP EGO Joh 5:41 I receive not honour from men. Luk 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 28

  29. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP EGO JC Maxwell Jesus leadership was empowered not by a sense of duty or obligation, or by a desire to build an image, but by compassion. 29

  30. TEMPTATIONS OF LEADERSHIP EGO the position does not make the man. It is the integrity of character, the spirit of Christ, that makes him thankful, unselfish, without partiality and without hypocrisy it is this that is of value with God. Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 356 30

  31. PROBLEMS OF LEADERSHIP LONELINESS Authentic leadership recognizes the loneliness of leadership, but is comforted by the reality that he/she is never alone Mark 14:37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? * 31

  32. PROBLEMS OF LEADERSHIP LONELINESS To wait patiently, to trust when everything looks dark, is the lesson that the leaders in God s work need to learn. Heaven will not fail them in their day of adversity. Nothing is apparently more helpless, yet really more invincible, than the soul that feels its nothingness, and relies wholly on God. Prophets and Kings, 174, 175. 32

  33. PROBLEMS OF LEADERSHIP CRITICISM If they criticised the most perfect leader Who am I? John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 33

  34. PROBLEMS OF LEADERSHIP CRITICISM How to deal with criticism: Listen Ask yourself Is it true? Prepare for future criticism Let each of those to whom are committed sacred trusts inquire: How do I meet the inspecting eye of God? 5T423 34

  35. FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP WHERE ARE OUR FUTURE LEADERS COMING FROM Leaders are chosen and gifted by God Authentic Christ-like leaders disciple leaders 35

  36. FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP WHERE ARE OUR FUTURE LEADERS COMING FROM He chose them Trained His followers to serve (He provided opportunities) (Luke 10:1-10) Worked as leader, not a boss (equipper) He trusted and developed them (mentored them to lead others) Jesus slowly moved His men from consumers to contributors ( He wanted to get his emerging leaders to think beyond themselves) He commissioned them ( Matt 28:18-20) 36

  37. FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP WHERE ARE OUR FUTURE LEADERS COMING FROM Those placed in positions of responsibility should patiently seek to make others familiar with all parts of the work... Instruct them with all patience, encouraging them to go forward and to do an important work. The Review and Herald, December 4, 1904. 37
