Latest Updates on Instrumentation Frontier Activities - September 2021
Instrumentation Frontier activities are picking up pace after the pause in early 2021. Various groups are resuming meetings and workshops, with plans for White Paper kick-off and wrap-up workshops in the coming months. Each subgroup is organizing and categorizing LOIs to drive progress in Quantum Sensors, Photodetectors, Solid State Detectors, and Tracking technologies. The Trigger and DAQ subgroup is also resuming activities with a focus on innovation through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Stay engaged and contribute to the advancement of instrumentation frontiers!

Instrumentation Frontier Snowmass Day, September 24th2021 Phil Barbeau (Duke U.) Petra Merkel (FNAL) Jinlong Zhang (ANL)
Introduction The Instrumentation Frontier was on a pause since January 2021* Topical Group meetings and workshops will start up again Find all relevant information here: https://snowmass21.org/instrumentation/st art Join our breakout session this afternoon and get involved New contributors are always welcome * Joined CPAD/Snowmass workshop in March 2021: https://indico.fnal.gov/event/46746/ Summary of Detector BRN and cross pollination with NP/EIC IF is planning a half day White Paper kick- off workshop in late November (date t.b.d.) White Paper wrap-up workshop planned for February 2022 2
T.Cecil, K.Irwin, R.Maruyama, M.Pyle IF01 - Quantum Sensors LOIs were sorted into 5 different white papers + handed off to other groups need to confirm that the other groups have taken primary ownership of the LOIs that we handed off. Developed an initial list of 3-5 people who can help us lead the development of each white paper. need to confirm that they are willing to take on these roles (~2 weeks) 3
J.Estrada, M.Sanchez, C.Rogan IF02 - Photodetectors Conveners have converged on the groupings of the LOIs into categories that are technology centered/cross cutting across frontiers. Each category becomes a subgroup/white paper writing team. Expect 8-10. Finalizing a few threads that were pending before we went in the pause. Some categories/LOIs have already been moved to other groups (greyed). Conveners will start meeting regularly to begin organizing communications with the proponents to promote white paper teams. We expect kickoff white paper mini-workshops starting late October. Planning workshop early next year, late January - early February.
T.Affolder, A.Apresyan, S.Worm IF03 Solid State Detectors and Tracking Prior to the pause: Collected input from LOIs and regular IF03 meetings: https://indico.fnal.gov/category/1183/ Organized IF03 lead-LOIs and meeting inputs into 7 White Papers; started organizing lead editors Plans for re-start: Reconvene regular meetings on Thursday, 1pm CDT (every 2-3 weeks) Collect any new input/developments by requesting presentations/short wriite-ups Confirm current plans for White Papers. Adding to the list of splitting them if desired by community Find editors who will coordinate document writing Meetings will evolve towards White Paper finalization Ensuring full input of community is included 5
D.Acosta, W.Ketchum, S.Majewski IF04 Trigger and DAQ TDAQ subgroup is resuming activities! Organization around common themes: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Trigger and DAQ At the edge , and in high-level triggering/filtering and detector control Innovating Trigger and DAQ for the next generation of detectors Including TDAQ architecture and infrastructure, fast computation on heterogeneous computing, fast timing, and trigger-aware ASIC development Readout technologies for future detectors Including wireless readout, rad-hard links, multiplexed high-speed readout, ... Plan for TDAQ meeting in October to discuss status and plans, organization of common White Papers, and new ideas/new input 6
B.Surrow, M.Titov, S.Vahsen IF05 Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors Status: Converged on a tentative list of White Papers and lead organizers Plan: Restart bi-weekly meetings everyone is welcome! to gauge White Paper progress Technical presentations from contributing groups Executive Summary Length (pages) 3 1.5 1.5 1.5 1.5 1 White Paper Topic 1 MPGDs: Recent advances and current R&D 2 MPGDs for nuclear physics experiments 3 Recoil imaging for DM, neutrino, and BSM physics* 4 MPGDs for TPCs at future lepton colliders 5 MPGDs for muon detection at future colliders Grand summary table + text Total of summaries should be <= 10 pages 7 *inter-frontier paper with Cosmic and Neutrino Frontiers Papers can be any length September 24, 2021Snowmass IF5 meeting
A.White, M.Yeh, R.Yohay Particle flow / high granularity Dual readout Unspecified/Multiple Timing Nuclear recoil Photodetection Very low noise Sampling Readout Total absorption Secondary emission IF06 Calorimetry White papers defined and editors identified for 5/6 Next steps for now through Community Summer Study proposed Paper writing schedule 1% Resumption of monthly meetings to communicate new ideas (and old) 1% 1% 3% 4% Incorporate findings from ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap, LCWS2021, CPAD, TIPP, etc. 25% 7% 9% Next meeting planned for 10/15 @ 2:30pm CDT 9% 21% 16%
G.Carini, M.Newcomer, J.Parsons IF07 Electronics/ASICs Before the pause: Started to consolidate White Paper topics from LOIs: Data Handling; AI/ML; Pixelated Noble Liquid Readouts; Monolithic Sensor Readout; Calorimetry; Optical Links; Timing; Deep Cryogenic Readout; Design for reliability analytical readouts; Photodetector Readout Current activities/future plans: Started coordination on ASIC workforce/tools/foundries; Calorimetry; Photodetectors; Silicon Sensors; TDAQ Refresh meetings with our groups and connections with other IF groups Invite speakers to update and invigorate progress on White Papers 9
E.Dahl, R.Guenette, J.Raaf IF08 Noble Element Detectors LOIs had been grouped into 4 topics: Enhance and combine existing modalities to increase signal-to-noise ratio and reconstruction fidelity Develop new modalities for signal detection Challenges in scaling technologies Improve the understanding of detector microphysics and characterization 8 (~bi-weekly) mini-symposiums will be organized to address the 4 topics to facilitate groups to discuss and reach agreement on important focus areas within each topic 4 Executive Summaries (instead of White Papers) will be submitted (coming from the 4 topic groups) that will be used for the report. Presentations of these will be done in an IF08-wide meeting 10
J.Fast, M.Garcia-Sciveres, I.Shipsey IF09 - Cross Cutting and System Integration Our next steps are to review the White Paper list again and see if there are new or missing topics Then identify lead authors for each white paper an and them to get content/input from the other LOI authors IF9 White Papers (preliminary list) Gravitation : All things gravity Coupling Experiment and Simulation : Cross section measurements for simulations; Modelling non-equilibrium quasiparticle dynamics Microwave and RF Technologies : Circulators, quantum-limited transistor amplifiers Facilities Foundries : Si, Ge, III-IV, Superconductors; Rad Hard processes and processing; MIT-LL Facilities Calibration and Test Beam : Water Cerenkov at CERN, proton and electron test beams, irradiation facilities Facilities Low background, Low Noise, Low Temperature : Underground facilities, underground argon supply, SC detector facility, mK Test Facility; Environmentally stable facility Facilities - Telescopes for On-sky Instrument development : Two proposals, one broader and one focused on Vera Rubin Observatory Collaborative R&D Programs and Interdisciplinary Research : Aka MultiHEP Workshops
