Before the human actions there were several
rapids and the island looked really different
•
Because of the construction of the power plant
and human activities, there are no rapids
anymore

Tar trade on the
River Oulujoki

Oulujoki and Vaala area were
important for tar trade.
•
Tar is an oil like substance from pine
trees. It was used for boats to make
them last longer.
•
Tar gave some income to people
because it was needed in foreign
countries since they didn't have pine
trees.

We visited the island, and
learned things about it
(history, species which live
there etc.)
What we saw...
- We saw only swans
- Swans are migrating birds
- They can´t survive in the Finnish
winter, because they can’t get food
- They move to warmer countries

Effects of the climate changes on swans
- We can have the "second
winter", very cold
- If swans come too early,
cold is dangerous for their
eggs and babies can die
