Journey Toward Racial Healing

Community Agreements:
Look Well to the
Growing Edge
Howard Thurman
All around us worlds are dying and new worlds are being
born; all around us life is dying and life is being born.
The fruit ripens on the tree, the roots are silently at work in
the darkness of the earth against a time when there shall be
new lives, fresh blossoms, green fruit. Such is the growing
edge! It is the extra breath from the exhausted lung, the one
more thing to try when all else has failed, the upward reach
of life when weariness closes in upon all endeavor. This is
the basis of hope in moments of despair, the incentive to
carry on when times are out of joint and men have lost their
reason, the source of confidence when worlds crash and
dreams whiten into ash. The birth of a child — life’s most
dramatic answer to death — this is the growing edge
incarnate. Look well to the growing edge!”
The work of Dismantling Structural Racism is as much an inward journey as
it is the external commitment we make to live into our goals as Matthew 25
congregations and Presbytery. I firmly believe with Dr. Ken Hardy that this
transformation begins with the work of seeing and being; examining our
hearts and minds to identify and let go of what does not serve the cause of
personal and collective freedom and
embracing
the new thing God is doing in
and through us. It is with this task in mind that I invite you to join me in a
five-month study and conversation using the journal/workbook, “
What Lies
Between Us, Fostering First Steps Toward Racial Healing.”
We will meet twice a month starting
on
 February 10
th
 to do some deep work
on our own and together to examine our racial experiences, beliefs, and ideas.
We will be looking closely at America’s racial history and its impact on the
people we are and the country we live in today. We will be doing this through
a faith lens that will include scripture, meditation, and prayer. We have
much to learn, much to share, and much to let go of so we can be free to do
God’s wi
ll more fully than we do now
.
Syllabus
What Lies Between Us
is designed as a 10-unit workshop in fostering the first steps
toward racial healing with an emphasis on individual and group practice. This

developing working definitions of individual and systemic racism and creating
action plans for personal transformation and systemic change.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion participants will have
demonstrated:
(1) competence in listening to the stories of others with humility, empathy, and mother
love
(2) evolving capacities for introspection and self-awareness
