His Identity Joseph was a descendant of David (Matt. 1:6, 16, 20; Luke 1:27; 2:4) Joseph s home was in Nazareth (Matt. 2:23; Luke 1:26; 2:4, 39) Joseph was a carpenter (Matt. 13:55) He trained Jesus in his trade of carpentry (Mark 6:3) Joseph was betrothed to Mary (Matt. 1:18; Luke 1:27; 2:5) Joseph took Mary as his wife (Matt. 1:20, 24) Joseph and Mary had other children (Matt. 1:25; 12:46-47; 13:55-56; Mark 3:31-32) Joseph was the legal father of Jesus, not biological (Matt. 1:16; 13:55; Luke 2:48) Joseph was poor (Luke 2:22-24; Lev. 12:6-8)
His Character Joseph was a responsible & trustworthy man God chose him Joseph was a pure man (Matt. 1:18) Joseph was a just man (Matt. 1:19a) Joseph was a compassionate man (Matt. 1:19b; cf. Deut. 22:23-29) Joseph was a patient man (Matt. 1:20) Joseph was a trusting man (Matt. 1:24-25) Joseph was an obedient man (Matt. 1:21, 24, 25) He immediately submitted and did what God told him to do (1:24) He saw his personal responsibility as assigned by God (1:21+25)
His Character Joseph was a self-disciplined man (Matt. 1:25) Joseph was a godly citizen, husband, father and man He complied with the governing authorities (Luke 2:1-5; Matt. 17:27; 22:21) He had his Son circumcised according to the law (Luke 2:21) He presented his Son to the Lord and made required sacrifices (Luke 2:22-24) He protected his family from danger, fleeing to a foreign country (Matt. 2:13-15) He obeyed every instruction from God without question (Matt. 2:13-14, 19-23) He took his family to worship regularly (Luke 4:16-17) He took his family to Jerusalem every year for Passover (Luke 2:41) He raised Jesus as his own (Luke 2:48; 4:22; John 1:45; 6:42)
