Investigating the Best Material for Food Bags

LO: To plan an investigation to find
the most appropriate material for a
food bag.

Who was John Boyd Dunlop?

John Boyd Dunlop
He lived in a city called Belfast.
John’s work involved a lot of travelling. In those days many streets
were cobbled which meant that they were very bumpy.
Roads between towns which were not cobbled were often not very
good and had lumps and holes in them. The wheels of carriages had
metal round the outside and they were very hard. This meant that you
were bounced about a lot when you travelled and it was very
uncomfortable.
John Boyd Dunlop invented a rubber tyre that had air in between the
inner and outer layer, instead of solid rubber.
The new tyres were a bit like a balloon, squashy enough to change shape a bit
when they went over lumps and bumps but not squashy enough for the rider
to feel the road underneath. It worked really well

The Dunlop Rubber Company that made the first tyres
still exists today. Across the world, over a billion tyres are
made each year. John Boyd Dunlop became very famous
because of his invention which made travelling more
comfortable for everyone. He even became friends with
Queen Victoria. He is remembered today and his picture
is on the £10 note used in Northern Ireland.

I can plan an investigation
for the most appropriate
materials for a food
product.
Like John Dunlop, we will be finding the
best material but for a sausage roll bag.

Food bags used to hold food.

The best bags for a sausage roll/samosa

Look at the different types of paper.
For example: newspaper, baking parchment, napkin, paper bag, normal
paper, tissue paper.

What are these used for for food?
e.g.
Newspaper for fish and chips.
Greaseproof paper for sandwiches.
Paper bags to hold food from shops etc.

Some of the papers need to be grease-resistant paper and some to be
water-resistant paper, e.g. taking food home on a rainy day, carrying
fried foods, wrapping up sandwiches that have moist ingredients.

Planning your investigation

You will be investigating which material would be best for making a bag
to hold sausage rolls or samosas.

The bag needs to cope with the grease of the food.

Watch the video below that explains the meaning
and importance of a fair test.

When we carry out our investigation next week, we will need a small
amount of oil and as many types of paper as possible, ideally 5.
Newspaper
Baking parchment
Napkin
Paper bag
Normal paper
Any other alternatives

Activity: Investigation Plan

Use the separate work sheet found on the school
website/teams file to plan the experiment we will
carry out next week.
Use the following information to help you:
We are investigating the greaseproof properties of
papers using oil.
We will drop oil on each type of paper and see if
the oil seeps through to the back.
It will be a fair test because we will drop the same
amount of oil onto each type of paper.
WE WILL COMPLETE THE INVESTIGATION NEXT
WEEK.

John Boyd Dunlop's invention of the pneumatic rubber tire revolutionized travel comfort, inspiring an investigation to find the most suitable material for a sausage roll bag. Explore various paper types and their uses with a focus on grease and water-resistance. Plan a fair test to determine the optimal material.
