IA prioritizes gifts and grants of $25,000+
IA does

 coordinate funding from government funders, direct patient support and other
non-philanthropic contributions

The mission of UAMS is to improve the health, health care and well-being of Arkansans and of
others in the region, nation and the world by:
Educating
 current and future health professionals and the public;
Providing 
high-quality, innovative, patient- and family-centered health care 
and also
providing specialty expertise not routinely available in community settings; and
Advancing knowledge 
in areas of human health and disease and translating and
accelerating discoveries into health improvements.
 
In IA, we are service providers to support leadership, faculty members, and clinicians whose
work advances this mission.

IA will ensure your proposal aligns with the organization’s funding priorities.
IA will monitor submission, awarding, and reporting deadlines.
For principal gifts, IA will help write proposals and provide assistance with impact reports.
IA is the liaison to the UA Foundation.
IA will manage “back end” operations including gift documentation, foundation account
creation, and recognition.

has facilitated meetings with Blue&You to discuss AR-IMPACT, understand the grant needs of
Blue&You, and schedule and facilitate progress reports and site visits with Blue&You. IA also
provides general guidance on budget revisions and correspondence with Blue&You.”

Working with the wonderful people in Institutional Advancement has allowed our very small dental residency program and
clinic at UAMS to have a large impact on the community. IA enables our program to not just secure funding, but to
establish relationships that feel collaborative instead of a one way stream of giving
. 
These partnerships have ended up
continuing for years instead of one-time grants
, and the quality of educational experiences we offer has been enhanced
because of them. IA has also allowed us to pilot and implement programs with companies offering in-kind support in the
form of dental implant services, products and equipment and most recently, a company offering no-cost certification to
our residents and faculty in their patented orthodontic technology.
Thanks to the support and expertise of Institutional Advancement, we have been able to give thousands in free dental care
services to vulnerable populations in central Arkansas. This opportunity has created a greater number and variety of
clinical experiences for our dental residents, and offered the indirect benefit of increasing the skill of Arkansas dentists in
the workforce.
Tips/tricks: 
It’s all about relationship building. 
The funder/fundee relationship is oftentimes perpetuated because the key
stakeholders are enthusiastic about working with each other. It’s the human to human interactions that happen when
creating the mission and executing it. I have found that my excitement to write or receive a grant is not to experience
typing a document at a computer, but to experience the real human impact on patients in the clinic, or the impact on
dental residents and their passion for healthcare when rare educational opportunities are experienced.

Help with ‘de-coding’ philanthropy world language
Help understanding the difference between ‘typical’ grant proposals and proposals targeting
foundations/individuals
Editing and design support for documents/shaping message
Guidance/navigation through UAMS internal processes (who needs to know what and when, how does
money come in, etc)
Guidance on external partner processes (how do their funding mechanisms work?)
Identifying potential external partners/funders who may be interested in my focus area
I think for me, I didn’t understand how different it is to work with foundations or individual philanthropists
and I really needed a navigator/guide through that world.  It is so different than our normal federal/state or
even large national foundation grant funding opportunities.  You can be an expert in grantsmanship and still
be clueless about how to make the most of an opportunity where a private funder is interested in your
work.  Their language, the people involved, decision-making processes, proposal processes etc were all a
mystery to me.
