Explore the concept of a multiplayer Virtual Reality racing game that combines the immersive experience of single-player games with the excitement of multiplayer gameplay. Inspired by the adrenaline-filled Running of the Bulls event in Pamplona, Spain, this game idea aims to offer a unique and engaging VR experience. Overcoming technical challenges such as designing the backdrop and animating runners and bulls, the prospect of creating this game using Unity and Android SDK seems promising.

  2. The Problem After spending a significant amount of time browsing through Virtual Reality game libraries, it is clear that most Virtual Reality games fall into one of two categories: o Experience: These games tend to be of the Adventure or Action categories, and rely heavily on aesthetics to create a mood for players. Typically these games are more about the design of the game itself, rather than the action that occurs within the game. Horror Games are a common game in this genre. o Collaborative: These games tend to be purely based on gameplay, like Mario Kart, and feature cartoonish graphics, and lack the experience element that single-player Virtual Reality games feature. This gives rise to a problem: there seem to be few if any multiplayer Virtual Reality games that combine the experience that makes virtual reality unique, with the fun gameplay that is expected in a multiplayer game. 2

  3. The Idea Create a multiplayer Virtual Reality game that combines the experience element of single player games with the fun element of multiplayer games. There are a variety of different games that would likely fit this mold, however a first-person racing game seems to be the best combination of a cool Virtual Reality experience and the fun associated with typical multiplayer games. THE BIG IDEA: A multiplayer racing game that equally weights a cool Virtual Reality experience and a fun multiplayer one. A game that simulates the running of the bulls would achieve this/ 3

  4. Background The Running of the Bulls is part of the annual festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. During this part of the festival, thousands of people run down the streets of Pamplona chased by bulls specifically bred for this event. Why this event? The Running of the Bulls is a unique event in that it is incredibly dangerous, and not replicated anywhere else in the world. It seems to be the perfect fit for the experience category of a Virtual Reality game. 4

  5. Technical Approach Designing this game is possible given the Unity developer and Android SDK used in the class. A few parts of the game would be challenging to produce, but on the whole it shouldn t be too difficult, as it would be a long run down a predesigned map, paired with a number of different collision triggers. There are a couple challenges to designing this game: o The Backdrop: Will require creative use of modular buildings to give the Virtual Reality experience an authentic feel. o Animating the runners and Bulls: Will require a slightly cartoonish representation of both the runners and the bulls, as well as creative use of Unity s scripting. 5

  6. Timeline Feb 12: Have moving bull and player representations on the screen Feb 19: Design a modularized set of buildings to form the street the player must race down Feb 26: Integrate in a collision system between players, bulls, and objects on the course Feb 29: Integrate all components of the game, so that it plays for single player Mar 4: Have the multiplayer aspect of the running Mar 8: Have the game presentation ready 6
