Better Oral Care for Homeless People Poor oral health affects overall general health, nutrition, quality of life, communication, appearance and employability; all of which compound the problems for individuals attempting to escape homelessness. Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
In the past I would watch people smile and their smile would be returned, but not for me. I was embarrassed to laugh in public and ashamed to smile in front of my daughters. Toothlessness only lowered my self-esteem which never lifted from rock bottom - until now. Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
Theres work still to be done An Action Plan for Improving Oral Health and Modernising NHS Dental Services (2005) stated that improving the oral health of homeless people was a priority. Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
National Oral Health Priority Groups Strategy, 2012 For individuals and families experiencing homelessness, simple things which are normally taken for granted by those with a permanent home, such as keeping clean, and finding and preparing food, are not always easy. Health and Homelessness Standards, 2005 Improving the health of homeless people requires long-term plans. Homeless people are among the most disadvantaged in our society, with poorer health and lower life expectancy than those who lead more settled lives. Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
