SMART GOAL SETTING QUESTIONS Use the following questions to help you with setting SMART goals for children. This is the part the children need most support with when goal setting, as they are still learning about cause and effect.
S Is it specific? What do you want to happen? What would you like to accomplish? M Is it measurable? How will you track your goal? How will you know when you have reached your goal? Who can help you? A Is it achievable? Is there anything that could stop you from reaching your goal? Do you have the skills or tools you need? R Is it realistic? Why is the goal important to you? Why do you want to do this? T Is it time-bound? When will you complete your goal by? How long will it take you to achieve your goal?
TIPS FOR GOAL SETTING WITH CHILDREN Allow the child to take the lead Let them be the ones to identify their goals. Use the target list as a guide to help identify the children's individual learning needs. We are far more likely to be motivated by a goal we set ourselves. Be a guide only in helping them identify what they want. Write goals down - This increase the chance of achieving them and makes the goal more concrete. There are a variety of lovely formats available to use.
TIPS FOR GOAL SETTING WITH CHILDREN Display their Goals This is such an important step with helping to keep the child motivated towards their goals. Place it somewhere highly visible. Set Achievable targets - Try to narrow their focus from "big dreams" like being a footballer to making the school football team. This helps give them confidence and build them up. Be their biggest cheerleader - Children thrive on positive reinforcement and encouragement. Praise the child when they take steps towards reaching their goals. Check-in on their progress and talk with them if they are feeling any doubt. You are their biggest source of accountability and support.
