If given the choice to name yourself, would you keep your given name or would you change it?

Uzoamaka - The Road is Good Many names have significant meanings and cultural links. oDo you know the meaning of your name? oDoes your name hold a cultural significance? Sometimes folks are named after a family member, a close friend, or an important historical figure. oAre you named after someone your family admires? There may be other special stories behind a person s name. oCan you think of any?
A person may choose introduce themselves by a certain name or use different names depending on the person that will be using it. Some nicknames are reserved for family or close friends. o ask if it's ok for you to use that person's nickname. Not all Names are Created Equal Some names may be used more formally in certain specific environments. For example, At work I go by Robert, but my friends and family call me Bobby. Other names may emerge while belonging to certain groups. For example, names used on a sports team or club or some type. Can you think of a name that you use but reserve it s use to only a select group people?
Fun Fact! President Barack Obama went by "Barry" while studying at Occidental College and Columbia University. Why do you think he did that?

Using the proper pronunciation and preferred name of someone is about kindness and respect. You should Feel empowered to share your preferred name with others Feel comfortable to correct others if they make a mistake Advocate for yourself if you feel someone is intentionally refusing to use your preferred name Ask the proper pronunciation of someone s name if you are unsure Create opportunities for others to share their preferred name with you
Dont forget! While you are making sure to get someone s name right, make sure to also ask them what their pronouns are.
