Year 3 Setting Description The Rainforest
End Result: Write a setting description of the rainforest. The following slides and video will support you in describing the Amazon Rainforest. You will write your description in the first person (I) as if you were one of the animals in the video.
Day 1 Sit back, relax and enjoy Use the following link to watch the advert for the Olympics in 2016, which took place in Rio, Brazil. https://www.literacyshed.com/rio-olympics.html You can watch the clip as many times as you like.
Day 1 Answer the following questions. There is a sheet provided for you to answer on if you can. What animals did you spot in the video? What happens to the animals at the end of the video? What sports did you spot in the video?
Day 2 Features of the Text Type Ambitious Adjectives Similes e.g. breath-taking, humungous, colossal, mysterious, exotic Use of senses Sight Smell Sound Feelings Sensations The huge trees stood still like royal guards. The leaves were as green as sparkling emeralds. Expanded noun phrases a towering, emerald tree with gigantic leaves Use Day 2 sheets. You will find a checklist of features, expanded noun phrase and simile help.
Day 2 Features of the Text Type Use the following key to identify the features of the text type using the forest description. Highlight or colour where the features appear in the text. Find 3 features on Day 2 and the other 3 on Day 3. Feature Colour Have they used ambitious adjectives? Have they used exciting verbs? Have they used similes? Have they used expanded noun phrases? Have they used all five senses? Have they used different sentence starters? Choose a setting description either Gold or Silver and colour all the features on this list.
Day 3 Punctuation To write an effective setting description, we need to make sure we use the correct punctuation. Our sentences need to start with capital letters and full stops need to go at the end of an idea. Silver Rewrite the sentences adding in the missing punctuation. Gold Rewrite the paragraph adding in the missing full stops and capital letters. Remember to read the text a few times and think about where the full stop should go. Try to clap the full stop as you read until it sounds right. Is there a sentence before the clap and a new one after? Choose either silver or gold on the Day 3 sheet.
Day 4 Golden Lines Hunt Read the forest description and jungle description. Both texts are setting descriptions. Identify any golden lines or vocabulary that are particularly effective and would work in your description. You can magpie these later. Check yesterday s silver or gold setting description and the next one (Day 3) for descriptions that can be used to find golden lines.

Day 5 Planning I have created a planning sheet with different sections for you to include. You can use this one or create your own. Imagine that you are one of the animals in the video. What would they be able to see, smell, hear and feel? See Day 5 s planning sheet example.
Day 6, 7 and 8 Success Criteria Read the different success criteria. Decide whether bronze, silver or gold is right for you.

Day 9 Is your writing complete? Once you have finished your writing, check through carefully and use a dictionary to check spellings (online dictionaries can be very useful during this process). Have you achieved all of your success criteria? Leave a self assessment and put your work in a safe place, ready to hand back into me once we return to school or you could take a photo and email it to year3homelearning@hillsideprimary.org.uk.
