We have a lot of student members who helped with creating Mission 8 to ISS.
However, our principal investigators and participants today are Bryant-
Alexander Oliphant, London Wiggins, Ebrima Sise, Clarence Rucker, Kayla
Kingston, Cameron Salisbury, Jasmine Wilson, Chelsea Mbakop, and Pamela
Ikegwu. These students helped prepare the mini labs and presentation.

The students from Chesapeake Math & Information Technology Elementary
School in Prince George’s County decided to research hot peppers. We examined
and discovered that hot peppers can fight bacteria. The purpose of this mission is
to find alternative food sources for astronauts. If they can germinate hot peppers,
this could be used to help fight bacteria. This will help to keep astronauts healthy.
We hope hot pepper seeds will germinate in a microgravity environment. This
could be a new food source for astronauts
.
Abstract:
The materials needed for Mission 8 ISS experiment include:
1 type 3 FME mini lab
5 ml of water
10 Hot Purira pepper seeds
5ml of Miracle grow plant food concentrate
5ml of 10% Neutral buffered formalin
Materials
Procedures:
For this experiment we gathered all the needed materials for both experiments. We
prepared two type 3 FME mini labs by measuring the exact amounts of liquids, and by
counting out the hot pepper seeds. The mini labs were given five milliliters of distilled
water mixed with 1 mL of Miracle Grow plant food. We wrapped 10 hot pepper seeds
in a piece of organic cotton ball. The last part of the FME 3 mini lab has the 10%
neutral buffered formalin. The type 3 FME mini lab clamps were clamped and color
coded. They will be unclamped (one on Earth and one in space) on day U-14 and
shaken gently for 5 seconds. Clamp B will be unclamped and shaken gently for 10
seconds. The mini lab will need to be shaken gently. No other interaction will be
required after unclamping. When the type 3 FME mini lab returns from space we will
compare those seed with the ones we germinated on Earth.

Why do this?
By germinating hot pepper seeds we hope to
keep astronauts healthy and happy!

Students from CMIT Elementary School in Prince George's County conducted SSEP Mission 8 to the ISS, focusing on researching hot peppers to find alternative food sources for astronauts. The experiment aimed to test if hot pepper seeds could germinate in a microgravity environment as a potential food source for astronauts to help fight bacteria and keep them healthy. The experiment involved preparing mini labs with specific materials, planting hot pepper seeds, and comparing the results with seeds germinated on Earth after the mini lab returns from space.
