HOW OFTEN IS ABUSE HAPPENING IN RELATIONSHIPS? ? 1 in 11 students reports being physically abused by a dating partner each year ? 1 in 5 teens report being emotionally abused ? 1 in 5 high school girls report being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner

WARNING SIGNS ? ABUSER Excessively Jealous Tells partner what to do/not do Checks up on their partner often Has an explosive temper Blames others for their own feelings/problems ? VICTIM Depressed or Withdrawn Afraid of Screwing Up Makes excuses for the abusive behavior Repeated Physical Injuries and Bruises Fearful and Afraid of ending the relationship
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS TO DO TO STAY OUT OF DANGER IN DATING RELATIONSHIPS? ? Recognize the warning signs ? Know what services are available in the area ? Learn as much as possible about dating abuse ? Tell someone about the potential danger ? Safety Plan ? Keep contacts for emergency services available ? Plan who can help if there s danger
WHAT CAN FRIENDS DO TO HELP EACH OTHER? ? Speak to them in private ? Listen first to what they have to say ? Let your friend know why you are concerned: Be specific. Refer to incidents you have personally witnessed instead of what you have heard from others. ? Offer to get your friend information. ? Mention other people your friend might talk to - a counselor, a teacher, or another adult they trust. ? Let them know you are available to talk more if they need.

WHAT IS SEXUAL VIOLENCE? ? Sexual Harassment Unwanted sexual attention that makes a person feel uncomfortable, threatened or unsafe Sexual Harassment can take many forms: ? Physical forms: i.e. sexual touching or grabbing ? Verbal forms: i.e. making sexual comments about someone s body ? Non-Verbal forms: i.e. sexual pictures that cause someone to feel uncomfortable
WHAT IS SEXUAL VIOLENCE? ? Sexual Assault Includes many different instances that describe unwanted sexual touching or intercourse ? Physical force of any sexual act (rape) ? Unwanted touching of the private areas of the body ? Sexual acts with someone under the age of consent ? Sexual acts with someone who is incapacitated ? The use of coercion to perform any sexual act

SEXUAL VIOLENCE HAPPENS Sexual Assault ? In Michigan, 40% of all women have experienced sexual violence ? Nationally 1/6 women have been assaulted ? Nationally 1/33 men have been assaulted ? College aged students are 4x more likely to be assaulted ? Every 2 minutes someone is sexually assaulted ? Girls aged 16-19 are 4X as likely to experience sexual assault, with12-34 being the highest risk years ? 60% of sexual assaults are not reported ? Approximately 73% of victims know their assailant
SEXUAL ASSAULT MYTHS & FACTS: ? Myths: Most women are raped by strangers When a woman says no she really means yes Women ask to be raped by flirting or dressing provocatively Rapists are mentally ill Rape is the victims fault ? Facts: Most rape victims know their attacker No means NO! Women have the right to dress any way they wish The majority of rapists are not mentally ill Rape is NEVER the victim s fault
WHAT IF I SEXUALLY HARASS OR ASSAULT SOMEONE? ? Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault are both against the law. ? Violation of a school s sexual harassment policy could result in disciplinary action. ? Physical sexual harassment could result in a Criminal Sexual Conduct charge ? Most CSC s are felony charges, resulting in 5-15 years in prison, or 25 years to life in prison.
WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU ARE SEXUALLY HARASSED? ? Say NO clearly- Be Assertive ? Try not to be alone with the harasser ? Document the harassment ? Tell someone in charge and/or file a legal complaint ? Get emotional support from friends or family ? Remember Sexual Harassment is not your fault!
WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR VULNERABILITY TO SEXUAL ASSAULT ? Never accept a drink of any kind from someone you don t know well ? Never leave a drink unattended ? Go out in groups ? Have a Safety Plan ? Have emergency numbers with you always, and cab fare! ? Be wary of keeping secrets ? Maintain safe boundaries ? Be assertive ? Always be aware of your surroundings ? Use the buddy system!
WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU OR A FRIEND HAS BEEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED: ? Get Safe ? Tell someone you can trust ? Get a medical exam ? Call RAVE-I/M or Law Enforcement ? Remember, Sexual Assault is NEVER the victim s fault!!!
