ArcGIS Desktop
 is the ‘traditional’ ArcGIS software that
includes ArcMap.
ArcGIS Pro
 is a (relatively) new application that will replace
ArcGIS Desktop. It has much the same functionality as
ArcGIS Desktop plus added 3D capabilities.
ArcGIS Online
 is a web only GIS application used to display
and share data. Edinburgh University has an ArcGIS Online
portal at: https://edinuniv.maps.arcgis.com
City Engine
 is 3D modelling software for urban
environments.
ArcGIS Enterprise 
and 
ArcGIS Developer 
accounts are for
setting up and developing server applications.

Current Licensing Options
 
Concurrent Use Licences – Available for ArcGIS
Desktop, Pro and City Engine – run from a Licence
Server.
Also:
ArcGIS Desktop – can be licenced using an individual
Single Use licence or a Student Evaluation licence
ArcGIS Pro can be licenced using a Single Use licence or
using an Esri Named User through ArcGIS Online.
ArcGIS Online is licenced using an Esri Named User
account that needs to be created on the Edinburgh
University ArcGIS Online portal.

Created through ArcGIS Online by
Administrators
Gives access to ArcGIS Online
 (including Story
Maps)
Can also give access to Business Analyst,
Spatial Insights, Community Analyst and
ArcGIS Pro
Allocated Credits (don’t worry, Ed Uni has
lots!)

Your Esri Named User gives you access to all
the Esri e-Learning courses and materials at:
https://www.esri.com/training/
 
Except for Instructor-Led courses

Overseas Use
 
Overseas use (e.g. for field trips) is permitted.
Licences can be checked out by users if they
are connected to a Licence Server for
standalone use.
If you use ArcGIS Pro and Named Users, you
can set up “offline access”
Use an Evaluation code that will give you
access for 365 days – for ArcMap only.

Permitted Use
 
Software can be used for both academic use
and internal business use. However, It cannot
be used for commercial purposes.
If someone wants to use ArcGIS Online for
internal business use then we have a special
ArcGIS Online for Admin organization which
can be accessed at:
https://eduniv.maps.arcgis.com

can access Esri UK Support.

EDINA can help on projects, development,
training etc.
 (but we do provide support on
the use of Digimap and getting the data into
ArcGIS)

 to Pro as soon
as possible
New developments are being done in Pro
Integrates with other parts of the Esri Ecosystem
better.
Think about the Esri Platform as: Pro, Enterprise,
