  3. What is Lectio Divina? What is Lectio Divina? Lectio Divina(meaning divine reading or holy reading ) is an ancient method of paying attention to God s Word in Scripture in order to achieve a fuller understanding of the message that is being communicated. Lectio Divina is a particularly simple approach to prayer. It can be used individually or in groups. Ideally, it should be done at the same time each day in a place free of distraction. It begins with the person reading a passage from Scripture or listening attentively to it being read. They notice particular words or phrases that stand out for them. They read or listen to the text again and meditate on the words or phrases that keep coming back to them. They silently talk to God about what they are hearing. After reading/listening to the text a third time, they listen to hear what God is saying to them. Finally, the person recognises and prays about whatever is in their hearts. People from all walks of life are realising the benefits of this type of spiritual exercise. It allows them to explore the deep wisdom of Scripture and to experience God in a very personal way. 3

  4. Lectio Divina Step by Step (Read, Reflect, Respond, Rest) Begin by reading a passage from Scripture or listen attentively to it being read. Notice particular words or phrases that stand out for you. Read the text again and meditate on the words or phrases that keep coming back to you. Silently talk to God about what you are hearing. After reading the text a third time, listen to hear what God is saying to you. Finally, recognise and pray about whatever is in your heart. 4

  5. Jesus Blesses Little Children (Mark 10:13-16) Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples scolded the people. When Jesus noticed this, he was angry and said to his disciples, Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it. Then he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on each of them, and blessed them. 5
