For a car to move it needs to have fuel inside.
 
We need to have food in our bodies to move. Cars are the same -  they need fuel to
get them moving.
 
There is more than one type of fuel for cars. They can run on diesel, petrol and
liquid gas. Some cars even use electricity to move!
 
You may have seen your mum or dad putting a hose into your car at the petrol
station. The fuel is pumped up from a tank, through the hose and into your car.
 
Your car can only have one type of fuel, so make sure mum/dad puts the correct
fuel in the car otherwise your car will not be able to work properly!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Millions of years ago the earth’s surface was covered with water
Living in the water were lots of plants and animals
These plants and animals grew old and when they died they fell to the
bottom of the sea into a big pile
Sand and mud began to cover the plants and animals
There would be a layer of sand and a layer of mud. These layers became
heavy and created rocks
Heat from the earth and the weight from the heavy rocks squashed the
plants and animals, which created oil
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
When the oil is ready it slowly rises through the rocks, although some oil gets
trapped underground.
 
Oil can then be found in many parts of the world. These are called oil fields.
 
To get to the oil you need a big drill and a rig. This includes the platform which
supports the drill and the workers.
 
Once the rig is built they can then drill a well into the ground under the water to
reach the oil.
