Fieldwork Brief Based on Fieldwork Brief Based on Fair.Work Fair.Work Principles Principles Pay (min wage) Bottles, NoSweat, PicUp, Uber, Bolt (Taxify), SweepSouth We were making more money in meter taxi where 1km was charged R10, but only R5/km for uber platform Uber worker They keep decreasing our rate. They don t pay us per kilometer. It s a fixed rate. I often end up spending more on petrol with no profit. Bottles I haven t found a job on NoSweat. The competition is very very high. NoSweat Asylum seekers (refugees) are not marginalized in most platforms It s a problem for us foreigners. We are facing a kind of discrimination in other jobs. Bottles should always be there, it helps us a lot. Many companies do not employ people with refugee status. They say the job is for South Africans only Bottles worker Conditions (H&S) Nosweat (Embedded in client/employer SLA), Uber (insurance + SOS button), Bolt-Taxify (insurance + SOS button), SweepSouth For insurance, they say they want SA ID book to get health and disability cover. SweepSouth Taxify does not do something right, it must be fixed, you know my name, but other people does not register using their real name, they put their false name like Spiderman Taxify
Fieldwork Brief Based on Fair.Work Principles Contracts T&Cs access - Bottles, Nosweat, PicUp, SweepSouth None genuinely reflects the nature of the relationship Management (clear, dependable, responsive) Due process of decision making: Bottles, NoSweat, PicUp, Uber, Bolt (Taxify), SweepSouth Consent for data collection: Bottles, NoSweat, PicUp Most use in-app support (chats) Yes, but it is always difficult to get help via the in-app chat. It is easier to go to their office, which takes more time. - SweepSouth worker No clear support mechanism regarding performance and ratings Uber should verify client complaints before penalising or asking you to make changes in the car i.e there are cases when riders request for things not allowed in uber, like smoking in the car. When you deny them, they rate you badly. In such cases, they uber should tell you what caused the low rating Uber worker Representative (collective representation) Provides collective worker voice mechanism: Bottles, NoSweat, SweepSouth? Recognizes collective body for bargaining: Bottles would if one existed.
