The next president of Argentina will be Javier Milei after he recently won the country's run-off election. Mr. Milei’s candidacy
was not without controversy as he made several remarks that he later walked back such as criticizing Pope Francis and
supporting the establishment of an organ transplant marketplace.
Argentina’s next president has an ambitious agenda and hopes to accomplish the following over the next four years:
removing regulations on gun control, having the military run prisons, privatizing the healthcare system, and subsidizing
private schools. President-elect Milei is on the right of the political spectrum and supports policies that align with
conservative philosophy such as opposing abortion and questioning the role humans play in climate change.
The incoming president has made headlines by pledging to reduce ties with China and Brazil, Argentina’s two largest
trading partners. Under the previous administration Argentinian leaders cultivated ties with China and welcomed the
invitation to join BRICS. BRICS is an international organization consisting of the following countries: Brazil, Russia,
India, China, and South Africa. Mr. Milei has signaled that he plans to align himself with the free world and desires to
have closer ties with countries such as the United States and Israel.
It remains unclear whether Javier Milei can implement his policies considering his party doesn’t control Congress.
