OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR DOING TY Only students who fulfil the application criteria will get into TY and therefore gain a better ability to settle down and study in 5th year. TY Year will only be a success if prepared to give it a go 4
WHAT DO STUDENTS DO IN TRANSITION YEAR? 5
TY SUBJECTS ARE DRAWN FROM THE FOLLOWING: English Maths Irish History / Geography / Society and Politics Biology / Physics / Chemistry / Agricultural Science Art /Home Economics / Construction/Technical Graphics Business / Mini Company / Film French / Spanish Religion / Developmental Education Physical Education Career Guidance Speech and Drama Computers-Microsoft Office Specialist (these subjects may vary from year to year) 6
GAA Future Leaders September visit to Carlingford Adventure Centre Social Awareness (PATH/Focus Ireland/ St Vincent de Paul etc) Special Olympics / Other volunteering activities Film-making Gaisce Award and Experience Scifest Debating Other Sporting Activities Law Module (Mock Trial) Driver Ed Course (optional) Introduction to First Aid Drive for Life (compulsory) Mini Company School Musical Visiting Speakers Competitions Retreat University Campus Tours (at least 3) E-Portfolio Healthy Lifestyle Programmes Introduction to Chinese Cultural Tours YSI Young Social Innovators 7 EXTRACURRICULAR / OTHER SCHOOL BASED ACTIVITIES
SHORT COURSE/MODULES EVERY TUESDAY JAN/FEB 2-4 PM AS FOLLOWS: Age Action Computer Classes Public Speaking/Mock Trial Photography Sign Language Strength & Conditioning Self-Defense Preparation for Driver Theory Test GAA Coaching Course Sports Physio or First Aid Students choose one, which runs for 12 hours over 6 weeks 8
WORK EXPERIENCE ON WEDNESDAYS Full day (same as the place of work) Preferably two jobs through the year Students/Parents find employment themselves in the summer, before returning to school in September. 9
HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR TY ? 10
THE APPLICATION FORM Two Parts: White General Information about Applicant Yellow - The Gaisce Form Both of the above were distributed to students on Monday Application forms to be completed and returned to the school office by Wed 18th March before 2pm. TY interviews are on Friday 20/3, Monday 23/3 11
MARKING SCHEME CRITERIA FOR INTERVIEW / APPLICATION 20 marks for each of the following: Marks from Year Head for positive attitude in previous years towards school/work/behaviour. What has this student contributed to school life? Competencies- as on Application Form Being a Team player / evidence of participation and volunteering in activities Knowledge of TY Programme 12
TRANSITION YEAR PAYMENT PLAN TY Fee 700 April 20th(Mon) 300 due with Acceptance Form May 7th(Thurs) 200 May 21st (Thurs) 200 This includes: Microsoft Office Specialist Course ( 100) and is compulsory to graduate Gaisce (overnight trip/bus/membership/meals) 100 approx. In addition: All bus trips are 5 per trip, as in other years. Carlingford 200 is due on return to school in September Some additional educational outing will incur a small fee. (some courses are optional) 13
Students must complete an Application form and formal Interview. Marks are awarded at interview for the 4 listed criteria plus marks from the Year Head. Each interviewer will independently mark each candidate after their interview. The cumulative mark from all the interviewers will be the mark for that particular student. A ranking list will be completed after the interviews with student s name, mark and rank, based on their mark. GUIDELINES FOR THE SELECTION PROCESS 14
