Exploring the Intersection of Biodiversity and Climate Change Post-2020
The post-2020 global biodiversity framework delves into the crucial linkages between biodiversity and climate change, emphasizing the need for transformative changes and smart, scalable targets. It raises questions about the role of youth, politicians, and the business sector in biodiversity conservation, and suggests establishing a well-funded task force for implementation challenges.

Some inspiring quotations from you (Slido today) Paris Agreement as inspiration! Elements like Nationally Determined Contributions, rachet-up mechanism and regulal review of progress! It is important to link biodiversity and climate change, but there is a risk if we ALWAYS do that. Biodiversity is not just a subcategory of climate. Agree? How can parties see biodiversity as a challenge to growth after IPBES? It is the basis for growth. consider Nbsap as a mean of implementation of SDGs at national level The steps to post-2020 seem business as usual. No transformational change. in terms of implementation, should we not establish a "task force" sufficiently funded supporting parties in resolving implementation challenges? We have seen the participation and inclusion of Women. Where are the youths involvement? Measurable indicators are what worries politicians most. When discussing on indicators for the post2020 where are the politicians at this meeting? How can the science community help Parties define SMART & scalable targets What do you think about having a parallel goal and indicator for means of implementation, f.i. a (transformative) finance goal? Where in the process is the input of Business sector taken omboard? What are the headline indicators for marine and coastal ecosystems?

Possible ingredients for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework: Goals for (elements of) the vision Mission and/or apex target Milestones/goals/targets 2030? 2040? Biodiversity outcomes species, populations, ecosystems, genetic diversity, function Benefits health, NbS, sustainable agriculture, sustainable use Direct drivers of biodiversity loss land use change, overexploitation, pollution, climate change, invasive species Underlying drivers of biodiversity loss unsustainable consumption and production patterns food systems, energy systems, infrastructure, the economy Enabling conditions, mainstreaming and other responses (e.g. legislation, EIAs, PAs, restoration etc) Indicators for the above Enabling elements/means of implementation resource mobilization, technology transfer, capacity building Accountability/review/learning mechanisms Overall structure of the framework Thematic issues that may warrant particular attention: e.g. corals, forests, mountains Relationship with protocols, SDGs, other MEAs, other actors on targets/indicators/implementation Transformative changes required to move on a pathway towards 2050 Building on NBSAPs and existing commitments Reflecting perspectives from IPLCs, local governments, gender, youth, private sector etc Communications a slogan for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework?

Key elements of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework for discussion: 1. Vision and Mission 2. Review and accountability mechanisms 3. Implementation mechanisms / enablers resource mobilization, capacity building, knowledge 4. Integrating agendas 5. Overall structure of the framework Targets for 2030? 2040? - relating to outcomes, benefits, drivers, and enablers 1. Embedding transformative change 2. Building on the existing framework 3. Taking on board diverse perspectives.
