Presentation Transcript

  1. An introduction to

  2. Introduction: Optics: Studies the behavior & properties of light, including its interaction with matter.

  3. Speed of light is 3 X 108 m/s

  4. Properties of light It travels in straight line Its velocity is maximum in vacuum The particles of the medium carry energy from one point of the medium to another. The particles transmit energy to the neighbouring particles and this way energy propagates in the form of wave. It exhibits the phenomena of reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, polarization and double refraction.

  5. Electromagnetic spectrum

  6. Light is an electromagnetic radiation

  7. Light pocesses Wavelength Frequency and energy

  8. Wave nature of light Interference : It occurs when two or more light waves pass through the same region.

  9. Diffraction: It occurs when the light waves pass through small openings or around small obstacles and spread.

  10. Polarization: It occurs due to the transverse nature of the electric field vibration in a propagating electromagnetic wave.

  11. Physics of waves Wave optics treats light as a series of propagating electric and magnetic field oscillations. We cannot see these extremely rapid oscillations. Anyhow, we can understand their wave behaviour, similar to water waves.
