  1. BODY IMAGE The learning kit is based on artist Anne Duk Hee Jordan s video installation Ziggy and the Starfish.

  2. Artwork: Ziggy and the Starfish Year: 2016 2018 Medium: Video installation, bed, fishnet, pillows, two single-channel HD videos, colour, sound Duration: 16 minutes

  3. Ziggy and the Starfish looks at sexuality from the perspective of marine life. Hydrospheric climate change is the deciding factor in the changing sexuality of ocean inhabitants. The development of several reptiles and fish is affected by the temperature at which their eggs are kept (for example, turtles develop as males at a lower temperature and as females at a higher temperature; the opposite is true for Australian alligators). of many marine animals. For example, in some places there are already noticeably more females than males. Global warming is an external environmental factor that is already impacting the sexual variety

  4. In the title of her work, the artist alludes to Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie s stage persona in the 1970s, which represented an androgynous alien observing life on Earth. 1) If you met an alien, how do you think it would describe the human body? 2) What do you think influences our opinion of human bodies? Today, we will be talking about body image, what impacts it and how we behave towards our own bodies.

  5. Ziggy and the Starfish Watch the first five minutes of the video: The video can be accessed on Vimeo here. Write down three to five associations (key words, thoughts, feelings) that come to mind while watching the video.

  6. Which perspectives can we notice in this video? For example, biology, ecology, aesthetics, sensory, erotica, etc. Marine creatures are beautiful in their diversity but this also has a function. Living organisms are different and their forms allow them to adapt to survive, find food, and mate. In nature, there are no binaries of beautiful/ugly, good/bad, acceptable/unacceptable these categories have been created by society. We are a part of nature: our bodies are natural, but our opinions about them are societal.

  7. Discussion Factors Impacting Body Image 1. What impacts our views about our bodies? 2. What role does social media play? In what sense is this positive or negative? 3. What body parts or shapes are under the most scrutiny by society? Is this different between the genders? 4. In what way does the image of the ideal body differ from the real, natural variety between bodies?

  8. Homework Express gratitude for all the things your body can do! Film a short video of natural elements (water, animals, flowers, etc.). Then, add an audio clip or write a letter in which you try to answer the following questions: - What would you like to thank your body for? - How does your body allow you to feel good? - How can you care for your body and bring it joy?

  9. Our bodies are unique and valuable. The body services us selflessly, gives us opportunities to feel good and helps us complete important tasks. We should respect and care for our bodies.
