  1. GORGON, GORGONIAN, GORGONIZE Greek Spelling: , BY: QUINTEN LAYMAN

  2. ANCIENT GREEK MEANING A gorgon was any of three snake-haired sisters whose appearance turned the person looking at them into stone. Medusa is the most famous of the three. Medusa was beheaded by Perseus, who avoided looking at her by watching her reflection in his mirror-like shield. There were two other gorgons named Stheno and Euryale, who were immortal, but Medusa was obviously mortal. The last part of Odyssey book 11, so many thousands of ghosts came round me and uttered such appalling cries, that I was panic stricken lest Persephone should send up from the house of Hades the head of that awful monster Gorgon. On this I hastened back to my ship and ordered my men to go on board at once and loose the hawsers; so they embarked and took their places, whereon the ship went down the stream of the river Okeanos. We had to row at first, but presently a fair wind sprang up.

  4. MODERN MEANING A common type of jellyfish are classified, in the subphylum, as Medusozoa. Medusa is featured in the Percy Jackson series, as well as the movie, The Lightning Thief, where she was portrayed by Uma Thurman. The three gorgons are also featured in DC Comics, where they fight against Wonder Woman. Gorgonize means to have a mesmerizing or paralyzing effect. Used in a sentence: She was prim and icy, with a Medusa-like glance that vainly tried to gorgonize the desperate man before her. Gorgonian, derived from gorgon, are a type of soft corals easily distinguished by their complex branching shape, which most likely inspired their name.
