New year in Turkish Mythology and nowadays VATAN ANATOLIAN HIGH SCHOOL DO A Y CE
Nardugan It is the first day of the new year in Turkish. The word Nardugan is etymologically formed from the combination of the words Nar (Sun) in Mongolian and Tugan (Rising) in Turkish. In Nardugan, Ak am trees, accepted as symbols of immortality in Turkish mythology, were decorated, traditional games were played, songs were sung and entertainment was organized around these trees.
Pine Feast Pine tree was considered sacred because it was a symbol of immortality in Turks and, according to belief, it was the tree from which the entire human race originated. In Turkish mythology, the Sun and Moon were at the disposal of God lgen. On the basis of the lunar year, day was overcoming night on December 25, and people thanked lgen for the sun returned on that date. In order for their prayers to be accepted in the new year, they were tying colorful ribbons and rags to the branches of a pine tree that lgen loved so much, and left gifts next to it. People were celebrating how light conquers darkness.
