  1. Natural Sciences and Technology Grade 6 Term 4: Planet Earth and Beyond Systems to Explore the Moon and Mars (ppt 2)

  2. Topic 5 Systems to Explore the Moon and Mars Vehicles used on the Moon Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  3. Vehicles used on the Moon Astronauts used special machines to investigate the Moon. The first astronauts on the moon could not move around easily because the space suits were very bulky. They were restricted to areas close to the lunar module (spacecraft). They also had to carry tools to collect rock samples. Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  4. Vehicles used on the Moon: The Lunar Rover [1] Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  5. Vehicles used on the Moon: The Lunar Rover [2] It had to be very light and was made out of aluminium. It used piano wheels, because it had to be strong. Each wheel also had an electric motor. Length [3m] ; width [1,8m] and ground clearance [35.6cm]. Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  6. Vehicles used on the Moon: The Lunar Rover [3] The mass of the Lunar Rover was 210 kg. It could carry a payload of 490 kg. Travelling speed was just 11 km/h. It could easily be folded up and kept inside the Lunar Rover. All the Lunar Rovers had to be left on the Moon in order to create space for the rocks that were collected. Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  7. Tools used on the Moon [1] Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6

  8. Tools used on the Moon [2] The following tools were used to collect Moon rock samples: TOOL tongs scoops rakes hammers core tubes PURPOSE Pick rocks up. Collect soil samples. Collect small pebbles. Break small chips off large rocks. Obtain samples from below the Moon s surface. Obtain material from deep inside the Moon s surface. electric drill Natural Sciences and Technology - Grade 6
