  1. American Physical Society American Physical Society Racah Institute of Physics Workshop VI Quantum biology: Does it exist and is this important? December 21st, Danciger B Seminar room, Afternoon (21.12.16 @ 16.00) 1

  2. American Physical Society American Physical Society Racah Institute of Physics Workshop s VI Dinner Can one predict the future? Can one shape it? Prof. M. Ya. Amusia Restaurant Piccolino , (06.01.15 @ 19.00) 2

  3. Collecting and using Big data sets 1 Inspired by Colloquium talk of Dr. Kira Radinsky, Director of Data Science and e-Bay Chief scientist- 28.11.2016 The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes Mark Twain

  4. Collecting and using Big data sets 2 1. 2. Accumulation of different data Traditional Sources: book records, new (old) newspapers, censuses, medical histories, questionnaires, result of tests etc. New Sources: internet, social networks, analyses of stored on PC data Analyses of written comments Likes , Reposts, or Dislikes as important sources of personal information 3. 4. 5. 4

  5. Collecting and using Big data sets 3 Example from the Radinsky s talk It appeared that New York Times can be useful not only in distributing anti-Israeli bias NYT news reports (1851-2010) permits to analyse some natural phenomena, not directly linked to activity of human beings. Impressive example: Analyses of mortality distributions as a function of the year. 5

  6. Collecting and using Big data sets 4 The plot of massive death of birds has small noise-type variations and a big maximum. Massive means deserving public attention, One can do the same for fishes, finding a similar maximumthat appeared at the same year, Using the same source, one can find correlation between these events and big oil spills, Analysing time scale, one can predictsimilar events in the future,

  7. Collecting and using Big data sets 5 All done without knowledge of Ornithology and/or Ichthyology , Require only Data base and Analysing programs, Able to find numerous previously unknown correlations, Opens a window into multi-dimensional virtual world. ,

  8. Big Data Projects 1 Obvious allusion to Orwellian Big Brother: Big Brother is watching you Big Brother is watching you First step is Collecting of different Data. Sources: old-fashioned, mentioned above New sources - everything in our life is reflected on PC and Smartphone: on-line financial operations, active or passive participation in social networks, even walk with a smartphone, manner of speaking on the phone and so on. 8

  9. Big Data Projects 2 Example Example: Big Data Watson for Medicine (about 1 million references in Google) Concrete data from San Antonio Breast cancer Symposium 2016. 12 questions to a patient along with all his available personal data. Machine opinion and human concilium: 1) 83% of conclusions coincide, 2) Of 17% reconsidered in favor of machine recommendation - 8.5% . Entire agreement 91.5%!

  10. Big Data Projects 3 Drug application simultaneous test of dozens of drag versions that have small differences on the molecular level. Result: Much faster introduction drugs to patients Collecting of detailed knowledge of a single patient and his/her personalized treatment Example Example: Some types of melanoma - 30% and personalized treatment 10

  11. Big Data Projects 4 Aim Aim: to destroys cancer cell s anti-immune barrier. The rest is done by own immune system. Much less harm then chemotherapy Preparation of each injection after personal analyses takes about 3 hours and a lot of money. However: Data on health of an individual becomes known to almost everybody, legally or illegally. Ethics of all this Ethics of all this: knowledge permits not only to cure, but also to control an individual .

  12. Big Data Project 5 Other examples Other examples - - Targeted advertisement From own experience: Last year I have booked flights and hotel rooms on internet several times After each booking, on e.g. 9th Israeli TV channel advertisement appeared directly connected to my previous searches and bookings. Now I understood that this was profiled advertisement profiled advertisement

  13. Big Data Project 6 Effectiveness of Targeted advertisement (Published information, Das Magazin N 48 3. Dezember 2016): Psychological targeting on Facebook increases the number of clicks upon an advertisement by 60%. The probability of action (buying) after looking into personalized advertisement increased by 1400%.

  14. Big Data Project 7 Other examples Other examples: Economy collective portrait of a trader/ broker. Most of current models discard trader/ brokers individual features. They are treated as particles without inner degrees of freedom, affected by a common field. However, they have inner structure and their behavior is determined also by individual habits, fashion, behavior of colleagues. Big Data can organize (help to self-organize) them.

  15. Big Data Project 8 Other examples Other examples: Multi-dimensional experiment in physics not y=f(x), but y=f(x, z), y=f(x, z, t) Remoted correlations Connection to other researchers Connection between different subdomains or even domains: Found a curve that describes shape of sand shores of oceans (e.g. inverse wave have its equation, and than find inverse wave), 15

  16. Big Data and Elections 1 Michal Kosinsky (Cambridge, Centrum of Psychometry, at Cavendish Lab). Developed for Facebook application MyPersonality. MyPersonality. Collected data on personality profile. Answers came from millions At the bottom lies an attempt to measure individuality by using five dimensions of each feature: openness, integrity, extraversion, benevolence (friendliness and willing to cooperate) and neuroticism (how easy it is to get you from itself) maxresdefault 16

  17. Big Data and Elections 2 Analysis of 68 likes on Facebook is enough to determine the race of the tested (95% probability), his homosexuality (88% probability) and commitment to the Democratic or Republican Party Likes are similar to fingerprints. All the analyses looks like DNA test in criminology. Soon the application MyPersonality MyPersonality was able to learn a person: better than colleagues - after 10 likes, after 70 better than a friend, after 150 better than parents! Smartphone is a huge psychological questionnaire, which we wittingly or unwittingly fill. You can also look for persons with a desired feature. 17

  18. Big Data and Elections 3 SCL (Strategic Communications Laboratories), London, UK Its aim: A global election management agency, skilled in applying behavioral modeling and micro-targeting solutions to political campaigns . Found way to the results and approach of Kosinski, or rediscover the approach Daughter company: Cambridge Analytica (CA) Worked with Ted Cruz in primaries 2015-16. Brexit 2016 CA was employed by Nigel Farage In August 2016 became known that CA works for D. Trump 18

  19. Big Data and Elections 4 They will soon be calling me MR. BREXIT! D. Trump Alexander Nix (CEO) indicated that CA's involvement took an "instrumental part" in the victory of Trump. S. Bannon is CA board member. CA acquires all available personal data from old and new sources, IQ tests that gave additional weight to likes , and ends with a single elector. 20161024_WP_CambridgeAnalytica_01441477450998 19

  20. Big Data and Election 5 CA claims that they have data on all 220 millions of USA electors, each by 4-5000 data points. Accurately analyzed 17 states. They are divided into 32 psycho-types and ten to hundred of thousands small groups targets. With the help of CA application Trump s volunteers manage to reach, if desired, data on inhabitant of a single house. My children will be unable to explain, what means a single advertisement poster for everybody A. Nix 20

  21. Manipulation of Data 1 Facebook becomes a perfect weapon for advertisement and relatively cheap excellent adviser for elections, profiling consumers and distributing news correct or false. Alternative for Germany has in Facebook more subscribers than both leading parties. Invaluable pillar for dictators, giving them false international support by injecting false information via their foreign agent One such agent can create hundreds of fake accounts 21

  22. Manipulation of Data 2 Intentional falsification incudes, but is not limited to: Organized distribution of fraud, Intentional personally addressed omission of non-desirable truth, Distribution of hate, fear, terror, rumors etc. Example Poor Lisa raped in Berlin by a Muslim Russian girl. 22

  23. Personal recollections on rumors Last year in high school, 1951-52, I have studied distribution of rumors. I would relate one of my friends a totally invented by me news story. It would return back to me in 3-4 days with some minor beautiful details added. To convince that I am the initial source proved to be impossible. The question Who told you? had a usual answer Everybody knows . 23

  24. Scientist are responsible for both Scientist are responsible for both informing and misinforming society. informing and misinforming society. Thank you for attention GOODAPPETITE! 24
