  2. THE PURPOSE OF CIVIL SERVICE To provide a qualified workforce for the peoples government Based on the concept of merit, fitness and promotion from within

  3. WHAT/WHO DOES ERIE COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE REPRESENT? Covers over 24,000 classified Civil Service jobs locally throughout Erie County s Towns Villages, School Districts, ECMC, ECC, ECWA and Erie County Departments. Responsible for the application and examination process, the establishment and maintenance of Civil Service Eligible Lists, the maintenance of all official employment information

  4. WHAT TYPES OF JOBS ARE CIVIL SERVICE? Most common types of positions Non-competitive: Qualifications, not practicable to test (Ex. Commonly positions with rapidly changing skill sets ex. IT, or pre-licensed positions ex. Nurses) Competitive: Qualifications, subject to examination and list eligibility. May include more than one form of examination: performance tests, cognitive exams , agility Ex: Clerk typist, senior clerk typist, caseworker, civil engineer Labor: Generally no minimum qualifications and not practicable to test, receives on the job training example: Highways Laborer, grounds crew worker

APPLYING FOR COMPETITIVE POSITIONS THROUGH CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS PROCESS Applicants are encouraged to visit Erie County s Website at http://www.erie.gov/employment/index.asp for a list of current exams posted for both the general public as well as current employees. Applicants may also call the Erie County Civil Service Hotline at 716-858-8729 for a list of upcoming exam opportunities.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR APPLICATION Payment processing fee or waiver form and documentation Proof of education, licensure, certification, if required (transcripts, RN, drivers license- CDL etc.) Make sure to include all employment history information required including applicable dates and status i.e. full time, part time, hours per week. *All experience is pro-rated

  7. DEADLINES TO KNOW: All written exams have a last filing date and applications must be received by that date and time in order to allow for application review and scheduling. Late applications cannot be accepted.   8. AFTER YOU APPLY: Admission notices are mailed out approximately one week prior to the exam date and includes time, date and location information for the exam. Should an applicant be disqualified to take an exam they will receive notification along with a deadline to appeal the decision in writing. Appeals cannot be taken after the deadline. All appeals decisions are final.

  9. AFTER THE EXAM Applicants will receive score notifications approximately 4 to 6 months post the exam date. They will also receive notification if there is any outstanding information required in order to be fully eligible on a list ex: transcripts.

  10. ELIGIBLE LISTS ARE SENT TO HIRING AGENCIES Once hiring agencies have the list of successful candidates from the exam (This is commonly referred to as the eligible list) Candidates will begin to receive canvass letters from hiring agencies to determine their interest based on position specifics: Employer Location Salary Hours/schedule

  11. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE APPOINTED? Who is Immediately Reachable: Top three plus equal to the third Sample Rule of Three: #1- 100 #2-100 #3-95 #4-95 #5-90 #6-90 *Hire must be made from # s 1-4 above
